All About Pocket Knives

This is a pattern that; I have never really had much interest in. But after picking up a few; of the doctor's knives; they kind of grow on you. I guess that's one good thing; about this hobby, there is always something new to spark an interest. It gives you that feeling you had; when you first start collecting, before you go insane. Only 4 at the present; but plan on adding a few more to my roll. black lip pearl, red lip abalone, pearl, Mammoth ivory.

Wendall Carson bings the Doctor's knife to a new level. That Red Lip Abalone will be one to watch for gains in value since it is no longer harvested (since 1997) commercially. Therefore, it's not a renewable resource. (Culpepper has a warehouse full of old shell - likely the ONLY source). This is Red abalone and lip means the scales were cut from the edge of the shell. (the heart was likely full of holes and unusable). Sport divers can go to prison for selling ANY part of the abalone. That's PRISON (San Quentin- Pelican Bay) - not jail, up to 3 years for conspiracy against the state of California + other fines and loss of property, including their homes. This year so far and last year 13 sport divers have drowned in Mendocino County (twice that many were rescued - some were arrested shortly after - let the poachers drown ) and all had previous arrests here in Sonoma County (avoid us like the plague) and all were Aisan. There is a Black Market that fuels abalone into China primarily and it's made up of primarily Asian Divers and organized Asian groups. They drive though Sonoma County were enforcement is the highest in the world.

Matter South Africa has a large abalone population and they sent several wardens here to be trained in sotting and investigating poachers. The poachers there were called the Pirates of South Africa and were heavily armed with automatic weapons and RPG's as well as hand held rocket/missle launchers.

Anyhow, that is a beautiful collection of Dr's knives, I've been an abalone diver (sport and have not dove the last 2 years - knee and feet problems along with right upper extremities have kept me out of the ocean) for many years (since the 1970's) and have a fairly broad knowledge of what's going on Worldwide with Abalone (interest and hobby) - sorry to hijack your thead with this information - BUT -that is WHY the Red Abalone should rise in value along with Green Abalone and soon, I think the Paua (poaching). Lip Abalone (edge) is solid shell and is not laminated - at this time. DAMN - I sure miss being in the water!

Hukk, thanks for the information. You mentioned the red lip abalone; in another one of your post. I was undecided about bidding; saw your post, and thought I better get that knife.

johnnierotten, the spatula blade makes it look like a real pill buster. I just won a 1997 Winchester; on eBay with the spatula blade. Hope to pick up a few more; with this blade configuration, as well.

I agree with Mitch, probably one of the most pocket friendly patterns next to the peanut and pen - IMO

Hey Paul,its hard to find a better knife than those Winchesters made by BGC.

johnnie you are right; Blue Grass doesn't cut corners; they make some solid knives. Winchester newer imports; are not in the same league.
