All About Pocket Knives

I have been wanting a Dinosaur bone handle knife; for awhile. I finally found someone that can do the Lapidary work. Sent him a cracked yellow handled trapper; and he turned it into a real gem.

Congratulations, I'm glad you found someone to put those scales on. Nice red color and good cell structure on that Dino bone. Makes a really nice knife, fun to carry something like that! Excellent!

Thats what i love about this forum,just when you thought you have seen every combination of MOP,wood,girraffe bone,mastadon ivory..............along comes Dino bone.What next?Hopefully some slabs of Lunar or Mars rock.

There are all kinds of possibilities I've been looking in to in my "spare time". Dino bone is one of them, fossilized Louisiana Palm, I have on hand as well as Picasso Marble, Agatized bone, other fossilized wood and of course Jade from Brittish Columbia, Wyoming, Washington and of course California. 350 million year old fossilized Indonesian Coral is another I have on hand, Serpentine is another, Quartz, Lapis, several jaspers and obsidians are out in a 200 LB box, along with other stuff that will make interesting handles. Oh and I have bought and located about 11 LBS of Jet, a gem grade coal, yeah it will burn too.

I guess you can get as exotic as a warped mind will take you.

Adam this is his site, he did this great looking knife as well. Most of the knives; that he list on eBay are from China, to save on cost I guess. He will do custom request as well; if you provide the knife. He uses a wide variety of handle material, he is a real rock-hound.

I saw his listings some time back and was surprised to see he had all the lapidary materials I had been collecting. But when I first saw his site, I just forgot about it because all the knives were bolsterless at that time, which is not really my thing. So, I forgot all about him. I see he has a Chinese Buck at almost $40.00, but if that really is Siberian Jade, it can be pricey. He looks to be a lapidary artist first, knifer second, but he is doing some excellent work! I wonder how many hours I'll take on my first Dino bone or Jade. I know the lapidary side will be slow for me since that's a new trick for me. Once I get some knives and sheaths out (fixed blades), deer season is just the second Saturday in August around here. I may catch a break and do a few in Dino Bone, Jade, and Lapis. Just not enough minutes in an hour. I do like nice Lapis with firey pearl.

I'd like to do some that are both glued and pinned, but for these stones, pinless is just fine!

Wow I like that and I bet you get to see a GEC in Dino sometime. I will be purchasing a prospect knife tomorrow. Possibly a Moose.

This is my search in favorites for Dino bone, ending soonest. Look for color and cell structure (I have recently learned).

I have seen one slab go for $147.00 and it was red and beautiful cells but never worth that much to me. I should take a picture of my lapidary area - all new!

Now to get a GEC in stainless as there is a lot of water work and a problem with rust I am told. I will try to get a muskrat or maybe a #23.

From those pictures, it looks like a nice piece and from the close up he was selling the strongest asset - the cell structure. SWEET! I LIKE it!

Well here is a few pictures of my newest bench and some equipment. The Inland bandsaw is for rock and has a 37" diamond blade. Because of room there is a all in one unit, it has a 175 grit diamond lap on it (next to the bandsaw which uses water).

The all in one will trim saw, grind and shape, lap and shape, and polish down to a 200,000 grit (diamond). I also have some Cerium oxide, aluminum oxide, chrome oxide and 2 other types of polish. This machine also uses water (I'm using distilled water)

Next to that is a hotplate and a dopping pot with dopping wax, they are used independantly, I just happen to have them stacked in the photo, I need a hot pad for the dopping pot, it gets to 170F. (dopping wax is a mix of wax and shellac chips to mount the piece I'm working on, to a dop stick. Last is a Dremel in a Drill Press and for this I will be using diamond bits at 100 RPM (SLOW) mounted in the bottom of a clear bowl filled with water. (I will take pictures of this when I do it hopefully later in the week or weekend). To do it correctly and to save the life of a diamond bit I will drill about 1/3 to 1/4 of the time - the rest is spent clearing the hole so I'm not just grinding the same rock at the bottom of the hole.

I am going to try and pin one but I may go with Jade first - I'm sure of it.

I will be using distilled water because of our extremely high iron content and it will stain some things, not this one though - I don't wish to experiment.

There is a white 5 gallon catch bucket in the 2 bench pictures at the bottom left. While I will use water it's not a whole lot. Never use these diamond blades and laps without water they WILL be damaged. This is for the rock bandsaw and the all in one.

I will take some pictures when I start, Jade will be first and I will write explanations for the pictures.

I will be using carbon steel because I have a few knives already apart because of celluloid outgassing. No blade, pin, or backspring to worry about. I will be shaping the stone to the liner/bolster so I will not assemble until I've polished, fitted, and pinned. An adhesive will be used also, a slow drying one so I have time to pin.
