All About Pocket Knives

Anyone see what this knife went for on eBay? For a 1972; what happened to the "good old days"? When you could go to a show; with a fist full of $100s, peel off 15 or 20 and walk away with a roll of Case stag, greenbone, or real red bone. You could hardly give away; a knife, newer than a 10dot.

Overall I feel eBay has hurt the hobby; yes you can make some good money, when a common knife will fetch a premium price. I can see the high dollars; for the Tested knives up to 10dot; but look what, the 1980's dotted knives are bringing. It sure makes it hard; to build a decent collection, without very deep pockets.

Well there are several points to look at it. First of all I think Ebay, if one is careful can be a good tool in several ways.
Of course since I am a neophyte I would never buy an expensive knife off of there for with out running by the experts here first, and what I consider an expensive knife is only about 50.00!
I have learned a lot just reading the post about knives on ebay on this forum.
Secondly, I have gotten some real bargains off of there, I decide what I will pay for a certain pattern then I bid on them until I get a deal. I don't go past my pre-set limit, often due to the wife's medical expenses I can't. That means I miss a LOT more than I get, but most often in the end after several attempts I will come away with the knife I want at a price I can afford.
My third point is that if in fact ebay has driven up the price of collectible knives, it just makes my collection, as modest as it is, worth more. If there was never an increase in the price of knives that could never happen. I am glad the price of the Reproduction Remington Bullets has kind of taken off a bit. I like the price of the Camillus Yelo Jackets has climbed some. I got some while they were cheaper and they have increased nicely.

And finally, I am not so sure that ebay is to blame for all the price increases. In fact I wonder if it has actually kept prices down a bit.
For example, I do some saddle repair and make leather goods for civil war re-enactors on occasion. I sell them on Ebay instead of going to re-enactments and it saves me set up fees, registration fees and above all GAS! It lets me sell a high quality product at near the same level as mass produced goods that some import from Pakistan.I expect knife dealers feel the same way.

There is no doubt ebay and other sites, like this one, open the door for new collectors, but is that a BAD thing? It does increase the competition for old knives, but what you may consider high prices now will seem cheap in a few years as the hobby grows. I expect no matter what the time period the guy buying the high end Case thought it was expensive.
Just my opinion and worth exactly what you paid for it...

I love that when I'm selling, the urge to win sometimes creates a LACK of common sense. No one knows when to fold them.

In the past I was selling off what I call new knives Case USA and newer. I have now stopped
after seeing what they are now selling for. I would have been money ahead to have kept them.
If I see them again at a good price will buy some.

I think ebay has affected the hobby in a very positive way...one,by boosting sales of young companies like GEC....in fact,I think ebay has been a major factor in there success.

I don't know if eBay hurt prices or helped? I see a lot of high bidding for things that could be bought at the store for less. It's fun to bid even if I don't win. I bid on things that I would not buy in stores unless I see it at the store first.

one thing about ebay, the number of knives available to the average collector. if knife shows and dealers were the only place to buy, i think knife prices would be much higher.

Without Ebay, or at least the internet, I wouldn't have a knife to carry. Knives around here are hard to find, and then are either made of solid gold judging by the price or they are from Taiwan or China. Bulldog, Queen, Schatt & Morgan, GEC etc are unheard of. Case is barely known. Pawn shops are full of rusty drill bits & worn out power tools. I did find one good knife in an antique store for a fair price. There is one tired Gun & Knife show that shows up every 3 or 4 months with the same old junk they couldn't sell the last time either. But Ebay in particular & the internet in general opens up a world of knives that is not available to me otherwise. And Ebay is the reason I know the local dealers have a poor selection and charge way too much for what they do have.

Knives of any quality around here as well are hard to find. I like ebay because if you are patient and wait for your chance, most of the time you can get what you want at a reasonable price but I too think you can lose your head if you're not careful with your bidding. I have really enjoyed makin friends here and doin some nice trades with them as a result. I try to stay clear of those bidding wars. I have also been introduced to some new brands here that I really enjoy collecting. GEC and SCHATT & MORGAN to name a few. I try to hit the shows when I can but this site has certainly been a great tool in my searching and discovering the jewels out there that would be more difficult to track down otherwise. Ok, I'm finished. ::blah:: ::blah::

Well rig, that Battle Axe stag is a great knife. Is it worth 7 Bens? I guess it was to that fella.

WOW! I see from the bidding history that he had 3 more bids after the winning bid, I wonder how much he really was willing to spend. Nice knife, for sure.

Well I did bid on that knife too. I would have loved to win it at my bid of $105.52....

As you see I was left in the dust on winning it.

I still do not have one like it yet. O well I guess it was not in my best interest to get one .

The hunt is fun as is the winning on Ebay I fell.

I just wish that when I win that my computer would play some music and some balloons would come out of it....

For his bids to keep increasing like that there had to be a reserve on the item, which he eventually reached at $325. If he bid 3 more times, his bid amount would not increase unless someone else bid, otherwise he would win at $325.

I've bid early on items for an amount which I did not expect to be high enough, entered a much higher bid in the last seconds, and because nobody else bid, won the item for my opening bid. The price did not even increase to the amount I first entered, but stayed at the amount of the opening price.

Ebay is great and just like a few of you guys said I bid only dream prices. I will bid on maybe 30 knives and win only one. Pawn shops are great my trip to vegas was great 15 CASE knives 5 Bucks 110's all near mint. The prices were great on these just put it this way the owner had the china and USA knives all priced the same I will have pictures in a week posted. These Buck 110 pre 70's are some of the most solid knives I have ever held

Like previously stated, I would have to have more confidence before buying an expensive knife off ebay. That's one of the things I like about AAPK. We may not have the value that can be offered on ebay, or reach the people that ebay can, but buyers should know that when buying a knife off AAPK, they know what they are getting. I watch ebay, but haven't been able to find a knife for deal. As you know, they wait until the last few seconds, get all wrapped up in the auction, and pay too much! I think ebay may be frustrating for people who may otherwise become an avid collector.

i think ebay has been good for the hobby because it does open up a world of knives to people who they would otherwise not be available to and some at prices people can afford. i collect older case knives, 1970 and before, and i know if it were not for ebay, i wouldnt have been able to build the collection i have, which is about 70-80 knives right now. i say this because i have been to the flea markets, gun/knife shows and knife or hardware stores and i would never have been able to afford the prices that most sellers ask for their knives at those places. dont get me wrong, they are great places to go and see and handle knives and even buy, if you can find good prices, but 98% of the time, the knives i am interested in are far too much than i can afford or they are asking book prices or above for the item. on ebay, ive been able to build a nice collection for a modest price. some i paid more for than others, but if you look long enough and are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, you can snag some great deals. however, with all that being said, these days with ebay increasing fees on a regular basis and with all the other changes they are making, im becoming less and less of an ebay fan. they keep trying to fix something that wasnt broke in the first place in my opinion and shouldve left well enough alone years ago, but this is all just my opinion.
