All About Pocket Knives

I'm new to the forum and collecting knives, so I doubt that my input will be of much value. However, I would like to know if the Hen and Rooster knives are good to begin with. Thank you for any information you can share.

I don't guess I have seen a chinese H&R; nor have I heard of one.

welcome to the site. im not a hen and rooster expert but i think jim frost owns the hen and rooster brand now. i believe they are still made in germany tho.

This is a great place to learn!

Hen & Rooster is a brand with nice traditional patterns.

I think they are still German made, but knives of more and more brands seem to made in China...

Buy the knives you really like, those who "speak to you", those you find interesting, fascinating or simply in the need of a good home and a friendly pocket.

Hen and Rooster are wonderful, but you should be aware of the facts. Bertram was the original H&R guy, who raised chickens. His knives were so good, so precise that he made a lot for others like Voss. AG Russell bought the firm in 1970 and kept it for five years. The name was then sold to Mr. Frost. I believe the makers of Kissing Crane now make H&R. That is why the original, at least prior to 1975 and maybe 1970 are preferred. See a C Bertram? Get it as that was the name of the original.

Kissing Crane (Klaas) went defunct some time back and United bought the brand but have also since let the brand go chinese.

Boker and Olbertz make the current H&R products.

I have a couple of United Cutlery knives made in Japan and they have very good steel in the blades. I use one to carve with and it gets sharp and stays sharp. Seem like a quality knife to me. Is UC still in business? I bought them from SMKW years ago.

I did not know that Bertram raised poultry, but that explains the name "Hen & Rooster". I'm sure there are many people who enjoy the Frost Cutlery knives, but they have not personally appealed to me. It's just a personal preference. It is my understanding that the Hen & Rooster knives are still made in Germany. What do you guys look for when comparing the quality of knives?

I actually was complemented when using a Hen and Rooster a few days ago. I was sitting on a bench in a park enjoying the sun and eating some fruit. An elderly man with his grandchild also visited the park and watched me using the knife. “That sure was a nice knife! What kind is it?” He usually carried a Victorinox and was generally pleased with it, but said it looked very boring compared with my jigged bone Stockman. I must agree that it looked very nice laying there in the sun…
As for the question about what to look for in a quality knife, I suggest that you start a new topic so that more members notice it! It's an interesting question.
