What's it called when a folded blades tip doesn't completely close?

you know, when it just peeks out enough to where it'll prick your hand or catch on things.

Any term for that? I hate it, by the way.

It is a 15 second fix. Just take a little of the heel off the blade on a grinder and no more snagging or poking

easy to fix. use a file and remove only enough to seat the point. a grinder can remove much too much and do it in a hurry.

The blade won't seat all the way. Don't remove to much metal cause then you may have blade opens to far.

Not if you take it off the kick.

Only problem I can see with grinding (or better, filing) the kick is, it might cause the nail nick to disappear beneath the frame, making the knife hard to open.

I want to make sure I understand......... You can file the kick or the heel (without pulling knife apart?) and it will sit deeper once folded

that's right. just a little material removal will move the blade into the frame. file a little and test, till you schroud the point. if excessive it can affect the way the backspring sits and hide the nailmark. don't take too much. it does not affect opening angles, only closing angles. if you have a vise, use it and keep your file flat.

Hey guys, took your advice and took a little off the kick. Much better folded position on this toothpick now.

Your right about the grinder - gotta be careful! I didn't want to dig around for my files, so I fired up the grinder - no problem with the kick, but I wasn't paying attention and the wheel started to touch the bolster Luckily, I caught it before it got too bad. I finished the job with a file and various grades of steel wool (had to smooth the bolster and liners back out )

This topic came up at the right time. I have two knives with this very problem and the dealer fixed the first one for me by filing the kick and I just fixed the second myself. I couldn't believe how easy it was to fix. Thanks for the great info guys.

Just to add my two cents.

Sometimes I adjust the kick and also adjust the location of the point thru reprofiling the tip of the blade. Most often with older knives that are getting a second chance at life.

hey j, that's also what has to be done when the kick is too small to adjust adequately. good "point"

All good replies. And should work great. But not on my Kutmaster Barlow for some reason?

if the kick is the same as the blade edge.....nothing to adjust, other than reprofiling the blade.

Look inside the knife to see if one of the scale pins is proud. That might hang up the blade...
