That's a very interesting knife.
I'm curious if there was a specific reason the blade and spring were designed to be so thick?

Some early known makers made some knives with thick main springs. Don't believe no specific reason, unless for heavy duty use and good snap? I have a couple other knives with above average thick main spring, a Walden Co-Operative Stag Barehead made only 4 years 1870-74 and a Stag Humason & Beckley Barehead Jack. But the Simmons is thicker than those 2.

Yes missing shield unfortunately, seen another identical with a propeller shield so I assume that's what was on mine before.
