Does anyone know what this insert material is? The knife is numbered R1573.
Thank you.

Per Remington's numbering system it is bone. https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/ca ... -materials . Looks to me like jigged bone that has shrunk over time.

Thanks very much. I tried to prise it out and it seemed to separate like something softer. And it dents when I apply pressure. Curious. I'll try a hot pin next.
Thanks

You are in better position to judge since you have it in hand. I’m going mainly by the last digit in the pattern number which your past says is “3”. That’s Remington’s handle material code number for bone.

From the picture, as I said it looks like perhaps shrunken jigged bone. Maybe whatever caused the shrinkage also softened it. Repeated or continuous contact with oil will soften bone. There may be other causes as well. ::shrug::

I think that's it - softened bone. Thank you for the explanation.
