All About Pocket Knives

I bought a knife with a GMC logo on the tang. I’m trying to figure out exactly who GMC is/was. The knife appears to be a Schrade LB7 - SFO (Special Factory Order).

This thread from 2020 is enlightening. This knife looks like carbon tit-nit.

The logo doesn’t look like any logo that General Motors Corporation ever used. And I had a somewhat frustrating email conversation with General Machine Corp in Ontario, CA. . . trying to get them to understand that I wasn’t trying to buy a knife. They kept arguing that they don’t make knives; they make machine tools. The knife logo isn’t them. Whoever it is/was had to be significant enough to commission Schrade to make a special branded knife run.

Notice where the lockbar pivot is located. There was another thread I started a while back about LB7 pivot pin location. It was in the Schrade collectors forum.

So this GMC knife must have been made after 1996.

The tit-nit GMC is at the top with a couple of LB7’s underneath. Does everyone think it was General Motors? It’s their initials but not their logo.

A mystery indeed. One I haven't been able to solve. But here is what I have found-

First, there are quite a few knives with that "GMC" mark, so it's not a prototype as some online have stated.

Second, I found several with that mark paired with Schrade sheaths.

Third, I found more than one variety of knives with that mark. I found several that look like a Schrade LB7, but with stag handles (example below), but I found another with a different handle shape, different handle pin configuration, and jimping on the blade (examples below).

Fourth, I found a few with the "GMC" mark on the blade, but an "Amway" shield set into the handle (example below). My thought there is- If Schrade made these knives for General Motors Company, then why would there be an Amway shield in the handle?

My current theory is that maybe "GMC" was a knife brand unto itself, and they contracted Schrade to make their knives. But just a theory. Maybe something in this post will help someone else solve the mystery.

When I saw the first example below I thought that maybe an owner added the uneven jimping, but then I found another example with jimping.

The knives in pictures 4, 5, 7 and probably 6, (though I can't see enough of the handle to be sure), appear to be made by someone other than Schrade. The front part of the knife frame flattens out before the pivot pin. Camillus and the Buck 110 are not flattened out like the LB7 is. Camillus made knives for many different companies I suspect they probably made those knives. I am not aware of Buck branding their 110 with another company's name. However I do know that Camillus made that pattern with Schrade's name on it as well as the Remington name.
You seem to have some knives patterned after the LB7, or made by Schrade and others that are a slightly different design, probably made by Camillus. I am not familiar enough with Bear and
Sons to recognize it as one of their patterns, but that's another possibility.
The one with the lock bar pin towards the front of the knife is further forward than I have seen on any Schrade, though I know they did have some variation in the lock bar pin placement.

The one with jimping looks like a Kabar 1189.
