All About Pocket Knives

Hi guys,
I just traded for a stag 3 7/8" Bulldog brand congress with no dates stamped. Etch is the Pitbull trademark. It has rounded bolsters and bar shield. I couldn't find any 2nd generation knives in this pattern in Buzz Parker and Ed Henley's volume 8 traders guide. Best I could tell, it looks to be 1982 Tobacco congress. Am I wrong?

I guess my question is: were any 3 7/8" Bulldog congresses made in the 2nd generation?

Yes.

could be a bkc73-stag-bar shield-p/bull trdmrk etch-300 made. 3 7?8"- round bolsters.

Or a BKC 171 Stag/3-7/8/bar shield/1 of 396 round bolster/ tobacco etch. As far as I know all second generation are celluloid. The 82 has a pen and a coping blade, the 83 has 2 coping blades.

it does not have a tobacco etch.

Here is a stag 2nd generation 3 7/8" bulldog congress with grooved bolsters and no dates. If it was a 1st generation 1983 series it would be dated and have the tobacco blade etch. This knife is not in the price guides.Many were not.

I made pics and tried to post them, no luck, but I ain't too savvy on this here personal confuser. I'll keep tryin'.

Congrats on taming the confuser. Good picture! Sure does look like a BKC 73 1st generation congress, a real keeper.

If it doesn't say 1983, its a second generation.

I am going to differ will all at this point. In my opinion your knife is an after market congress that is supposed to be BKC#73. The european stag on the knife to me dates it as a knife put together long after 1982 which was when it was supposed to have been released. None of the smooth bolster 1982 tobacco series 1st generations had dates that I am aware of. I will post a picture of what a genuine BKC#73 released in 1982 looks like and you can compare.

I was thinking the same and I have a half dozen knives, maybe a couple more that are as we coined the phrase....................cobbled. Same thing that this picture implies, some were made in 1984 and some say they were made in 1984, but they have European stag not the first generation stag.

The 1984 knives on the right were made in 1984. The 1984 knives on the left are European stag and made possibly in the 90's or even after 2000. Thus the name cobbled.

The knives on the left were not made in 1984 despite the paper "guarantee" some had.

That picture is probably the best example out there Hukk. The knives that have been put together later are actually good [/b]quality knives, some nearly as good as the originals. With a little effort it is pretty easy to tell them. The old original bulldogs are in my opinion some of the best I have ever experienced. This is a good post.
