All About Pocket Knives

Hey there folks,
Name’s Jake, live in eastern Vermont, central Maine born and raised. Been using and somewhat collecting pocket knives since I was a young child, I’ve always had something for a folder in my pocket. My favorite type is the stockman, not sure how I landed on them but have mostly had an Old Timer 8OT on me since I can remember.
Last few years I’ve branched out, and have a lot of different brands, Rough Ryder, Marbles, Sharps, Old Forge, a few Case.
Lately, my passion has been vintage which I can’t seem to get enough of. Colonial, Camillus, some Utica, Schrade, Walden, etc.
Have purchased some for collecting, some for restoring, some for parts. Love tearing them apart, the steps/process of rehab, replacing scales, blades, springs, etc.
I come over to the repair/restore hobby side from owning and tinkering on guns, which, if you think about it, isn’t really much different, other than much larger in size…
Rust/corrosion, dents, dings and cracked wood, frozen parts, all needing love, a little attention and some elbow grease to make it what it was or what we want it to be.
Just wanted to say hi, give a little background and thank you all for allowing me to share and express myself on here. I’m far from an expert, my handy work on projects is still young and I’m still learning, but, it’s a fun hobby and I can see forward progress the more I do.
Thanks again for the opportunity to join, to share, and most importantly, to learn from you fine folks and see your experiences.

Well good morning! Welcome to AAPK - I think you'll enjoy hanging out here. Plenty to see, do , pleces to get lost in, etc. Thanks for sharing a little about your interests. I picked up on how much you enjoy the process of the fixing/restoration - man I can appreciate that. Few things as satisfying as taking something neededing love and attention, applying your art, then seeing the results - perfect!

Looking forward to seeing some of your favorites.

Howdy, Jake!

Looks like you have a great pile of pocketknives, apparently you've got the same disease as a bunch of us. Some of us have been diagnosed with the NAK syndrome (need another knife).

Yeah I’ve been collecting for a while, but really getting into vintage and resto’s as of late. And, I can’t lie. Those RR build kits are a blast for little money. I have a few Old Timer 8OT’s I’ve bought and am waiting on replacement blades from Discount Cutlery to arrive so I can tear into them and make pristine again, swapping scales, blades, only wish it wasn’t like looking for a needle in a stack of needles to find main and secondary springs for them…

Well, I’ve spent a lot of time on eBay, and I travel all over New England for work, so I hit different stores, up my way not many antique or pawn shops, so I do the online thing, SMKW, bought some from people directly I’ve brought from on the eBay, surprisingly, a lot of my Schrade/OT/Imperial tins and singles I’ve dug out of Tractor Supply clearance racks.
Then there’s Whatnot…
That place, and this is only my personal humble opinion and experience, is addicting and they make it easy to head down a bad path.
Luckily for me, personally, I had never gotten too wrapped up in one manufacturer. I prefer types vs. makers. Stockman, by far my favorite type.
I gave my daughter my 30+ year old wooden handled OT 8OT for Christmas this past year, that old thing had been in my pocket since my 19th birthday (I’m 52)she had used it to open something shortly before Xmas and asked why the handles were oily.
I told her that the scales were cracked around the pins, and I put vegetable oil on the scales when they dried out to keep the wood swelled so I didn’t lose pieces.
She thought that was cool and told me that when I was done with it, she wanted it. So I gifted it to her in her stocking.
I’d bought all the boys in our family OT 8OT’s for Christmas, and got myself one as well to replace it.
Just Delrin handled, nothing fancy, Tractor Supply specials, there’s a few mechanics, and the like in the boys, so most will be lost, used as pry bars, etc. so not a lot of investment for them to use hard and incorrectly.
I hated it…
After having a wood handled in my pocket for so long, I didn’t like the plastic, haha.
Went back and got myself a second one, iron wood and it’s been there for nearly 6 months.
It’s not my old one, and yes, not made on our soil, but, I don’t get too far out into the weeds on details.
Says Old Timer, feels and acts like an Old Timer, that, I guess works for me. I like inexpensive, because if I like it and think I need it, it’ll find it’s way home.

I have been since I’ve been on here only a few days. Bought RR red jigged bone and jigged black bone scales off a fellow member this morning.i have several of the RR kits to build for family members, some Colonial, Barlow branded bankruptcy small lock backs I’m going to bolster and scale, hoping to sell a lot of those, then I have close to a half dozen 8OT’s to re-blade, scale and cleanup. After the list is caught up, back to buying more knives… but look at the classifieds probably more than I should, and I’m sure soon I’ll be buying more knives, as that itch seems to need constant scratching.

I’ve loved Mossberg shotguns nearly as long as stockman pocket knives…
That was a must have and has only been out of the box to show off.
Definitely a wall hanger for me and not a user.

I’ve loved Mossberg shotguns nearly as long as stockman pocket knives…
That was a must have and has only been out of the box to show off.
Definitely a wall hanger for me and not a user.

I'm left-handed and I was always partial to the Mossberg shotguns' safety being ambidextrous,

so I have been a longtime Mossberg shotgun user.

And I'm a Stockman "accumulator" ....

so there you go....

I work in a different state Than I live, so physical hobby time is way less than online hobby time, and only when I’m home on weekends. I’m in motels all week, once I get out of work, now that I’m on here, I have research and materials and a vast data bank of knowledge to tap into and knives to buy for when I get home… Trust me, I’m sure a lot of you will get your fill of me, haha.
