Just a heads up, to y'all, for a mere $120 (plus $6.07 shipping), you can be the proud owner of an "Old Case Pocket Knife" ....

I suspect this is why when I go to a yard sale or pawn shop these days and I see similar condition knives or an old Case knife in even worse condition, that the sellers want a price for it in what I call: the "Flea-Bay Price Range". ... They love to tell me, "I saw one on Flea-Bay for the same price!!!" .... and that means that their knife is worth every penny of what they are asking..... ......

At $5.89 the shipping is reasonable. If the knife was free I might be interested in it for parts. Reasonable shipping with a ridiculous price ..... I don't think so.

The tang stamp dates the master blade 1990-1993 and it is stainless. If the skinner blade is also stainless how did the pits in it get so deep? Was it lost in a boat bilge or on a salt water beach?

Giving the seller his due, he did write OBO and it's refreshing to see an ebay knife not described as still having its factory edges.

That one has been rode hard and put away wet.

I would have bought it... except that the title of the listing did not say "Rare, Vintage, Old Case Pocket Knife, slightly used"....

That’s the new AI item description option. Its the worst thing eBay has added in a long time in my opinion. Sellers use it and it tells you absolutely nothing about the item in question or its condition.

The title of the 6318 auction includes "blade wear" but its master clip blade is 2/3 gone. The only thing incorrect, other than its value, is the liners are nickel silver not stainless steel, and that is probably not deliberately wrong. Buy it now items are absurdly priced on ebay regularly. Fishing for the kind of suckers they're after does not require a license as far as I know.

What I mean when I say the new AI description tells potential buyers nothing about the item or its actual condition is that you get a machine written blurb, that is often incorrect and seems like it is trying to describe what the item is to another machine.

Thats not what I want in an item decription. I want to know what the condition of the item I am looking at is.

This may be a case of buy the story not the knife, cause that old bugger has some to tell.

Oddly enough, I am one of those wierdos that buys well worn knives like this for that reason. I hate seeing well loved knives get thrown out.

But not at that price. Ive given way less for mint XX era 6318s.

Redbone I've been known to buy some like that myself but as you say the price was much more reasonable.

I don’t understand all the concern over the seller’s $120 OBO asking price. Yes it’s worn out, “ride hard and put up wet”, but at least it looks like an HOK. Just a couple of weeks ago some sucker eBay buyer paid over $600 for an across the room POS fake. So in perspective why not ask an outlandish price for a worn out, but legitimate knife?

I suppose maybe you can fool and impress some folks with a looks-new fake, but anyone can recognize a worn out knife.

The problem with over-inflated prices on junk knives that I have experienced is that now when I go to a flea market or gun show, every seller there has looked up his beat-up (but usable) old knife and now wants at least what someone on Flea-Bay is asking for a worn-out POS such as you see pictured on this thread. These inflated asking prices 100% affect other secondary markets! I went to a flea market yesterday and there was a small Case two blade knife, completely worn out and for a mere $50 you could take it home. I wouldn't have given $5.00 for it.

I didn't buy one knife there because this was the same story at every table that had a knife for sale. A guy had a bayonet in a glass case, and I asked him about it. He said "I don't know anything about it, but it's $100. If I knew more about it would cost more." He then asked me if I could tell him what it was and what it went to. I was polite and said, "no idea" and walked away.

Here is what I hear sellers say all the time when asked about the price: "We looked it up!!!"

I think there are some people who buy worn out knives and carry them as status symbols. Makes them appear as if they did a lot of work to wear them out. lol

Status symbols? Knives with half their blade(s) gone only make their owner appear too stupid to sharpen with appropriate stones.

On the other hand, I'll test your theory. I'm over due for pocket rotation any way. I just got out my most worn down knife, a Case XX over USA era 6308 CV Whittler. At a gun show I couldn't walk past a red bone Whittler with nickel silver liners and wedge and great snap for $5 - $10. I forget the exact # of $. At 1 13/16" I'm guessing its master lost 5/16" to sharpening and much of its jigging is worn off. While I'm out side this afternoon I'll show it to the Douglas squirls and see if they forget the undone yard work and raise my "status."
