All About Pocket Knives

Can anyone help identifying this guy. It was my wives grandfathers and includes a handmade leather sheath. I can make out "monds" and Molybdenum and USA. Im wondering if it is custom from a Simonds File? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks All!

i found a simonds mfg. co. they were a saw mfr. had knives made possibly by camillus, c1940. knives were for ad/promotional purposes. sorry, not much help.

that first letter looks like an X to me.

Are there any lines to indicate it as a file? If not then I would suggest that the use of Molybdenum in that steel was for a High Speed Steel application. I would think that this may have come from a saw blade. Although moly is common in steels today, it really wasn't used until the Germans used it to strengthen the steel in BIG BERTHA was our first known use in WWI. Big Bertha was a 422mm shell, (16.5 inches) that in WWI had a range of about 9 miles.

Moly was responsible for the steel to withstand these heavy pressures of a 820 KG projectile and a charge of powder that could propel it 9 miles.

It could be a file or it could be a saw blade.

Thank You, yes I have done quite a bit in chemistry, physics, electronics, material sciences and some other stuff. Amazing what you can pick up in a place like Helett Packard and Agilent technologies. Especially if you do maintenance in a cleanroom environment where they make GaAs and InGaP integrated circuits. It's almost like voodoo!
