All About Pocket Knives

i went to the NCCA knife show in Sturbridge, Mass yesterday.. and picked up this beauty from my new friend, Jim.
the tang stamp says U.S. CUT CO (arched) over MADE IN U.S.A.
The only info i found online was a small mention of the company incorporating in Belleville, NJ in 1923 and going out of business sometime between 1932 and 1934. i'm wondering if anyone here has any more detailed history of this company? thanks fellas

Goins’ Encyclopedia has only “U.S. CUT. CO MADE IN USA g 1920-1940.”

He has several other “U.S. CUT. CO.” stamps listed. “U.S. CUT. CO. TERRE HAUTE”, and just “U.S. CUT. CO.” (no location). All of them also say g 1920-1940. There are also stamps “U.S. CUT. CO. BALTO. MD.” and “U.S. CUT. CO. BALTIMORE, MD.” Both of which say g 1875-1900.

In his book it says the italicized g preceding the dates means he was not able to find factual data to back up the dates but he believes them to be “fairly accurate” and therefore should only be used to date a knife to a specific time period.
No additional information is given for any of those stamps. Maybe someone else has more.

I think the U.S. Cut. Co. in Baltimore was a dealer in seconds for Walden et. al.

The one I have actually has "BALTIMORE" stamped on the tang. The others I have seen did as well.

Thanks guys. I'm still getting used to the fact that info on a lot of these old companies is almost non-existent. But I can be sure it's Pre-war... And the bottom line is, it's a great little knife that I'll be happy to have in the pocket on a regular basis..

Levine's GUIDE also lists a U.S. Cutlery Co. in St. Louis, c, 1900 as a wholesaler of a "Vulcan" mark. J.O'.

I own a Vulcan hawkbill knife made in Sheffield, but it has no US Cutlery mark. Good luck with your research. J.O'.

My book, New Jersey Cutlery, says: United States Cutlery Co. was located on Belleville, New Jersey.
A local historian claims the company never made knives but furnished knife blades to others for final assembly.

. Thanks, this sounds like the info I found. I'm still new to this whole thing, getting used to the fact that lots of these companies didn't keep much for records...

I'm thinking I'll just embrace the fact that this is my "mystery knife"

I'd say it would make a pretty decent packer.
