All About Pocket Knives

My grandpa passed a few weeks ago and we loved collecting knives together. This was his collection the knives in red boxes were given to other family members. I would like to try and replace them and make the collection whole again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m sorry this is the best picture I have of them.

Condolences for your loss. It will be difficult, if not impossible to accurately identify the knives from just that picture. Some may recognize a particular pattern or maker but to know when a knife was made you need to see the stamp on its tang, which is not visible on any of the knives. Hopefully someone will be able to help with some of them.

I sympathize with your situation. My grandfather died during final exam week while I was away in college. I was able to attend his service but had to return to school immediately afterwards. His belongings were divided up and claimed by the time I was able to return. My youngest sister says she has one of grandpa’s pocket knives, but doesn’t know where it is!

Keep you and your Grandpa's knife-collecting legacy going by adding knives you think he'd want in his collection. And try to find someone like a son or nephew or niece to share the collecting hobby with you.

Thank you all for the advice! I was able to contact everyone who received knives and got better pictures of the blades and the markings. Now I just have to start hunting them down.

Your story reminds me of one my dad told me about what happened when his grandfather passed. My great-grandfather was a blacksmith at Western Maryland Railway back around 1900, and at the ripe old age of 25 he decided to get in the dairy business. He farmed with 2 drought horses and did everything the old fashioned way- by hand.

When he passed, my grandfather's brother and sister's had an auction company come in one day when my dad was at high school. When he got home from school, all of the blacksmith tools and anything of value was gone.

I did find an old Walden Knife Co. folding Hunter in an old tool box with some small implement parts which I believe was owned by my great-grandfather. It is in rough shape but I treasure it, along with a few knives my grandfather's owned and my dad's 8OT.

Red, Same thing happened when my Grandfather died. I was in the Army and the family split everything up as though I were not existent. Took a lot of years to get over it but as they passed on, I accumulated my share, Funny how a death in the family can bring out the best and worst in folks. O'.

I lived many hours away and was working when my dad and later my mom passed. I stayed all I could before they passed at hospice, but had to return to work. I was given a few things, but it was well picked over. Kind of hurt my feelings. Later as my siblings passed I had opportunities to obtain more of the family keepsakes. But I’d trade it all for one more Sunday dinner at home with all of them. Man we had fun together.
