All About Pocket Knives

This is the first double switchblade I have ever seen. Also, a first with Sterling scales have any of you seen anyone like this?

This was a regular item in the Schrade catalog. A lot are marked as being something promoting the Home Insurance Company of New York. The Press Button knife company had auto knives with sterling silver scales also.

They are nice knives in my opinion. Good for gifts for women and maybe a way to get them interested in a hobby they otherwise might not get or understand.

Thanks for the information. I’ve seen single blade switchblade, but never a double with a button for each blade.

Here are some doubles with a Catalog I got from a former manager at the Schrade factory along with a huge pile of old paperwork.

Yes there are 3 patent dates. Dec. 21, 09
Sept. 13, 10. And Jun. 6, 16.

What is the approximate size? There were 2 sizes.

2 7/8”

Looking at your knifes patent dates. it would have been made between 1916-1946

I see you have one of the Press Button knives sterling silver scaled model with a monster face on it. That one creeps me out. Why put that on a knife?

The embellishments are in line with the 'Art Nouveau' style that was very popular from the early 1890s until (approximately) the beginning of World War I in 1914.

This style emphasizes lush, natural images -- to quote
the Encyclopedia Britannica: "....undulating asymmetrical lines often seen as flower stalks and buds, vine tendrils, and insect wings."

It is entirely appropriate to see this face surrounded by leaves and vines. It is not a 'monster face' -- it is known
as "the Green Man" or "foliate mask".
Also known in central Europe as "the Wild Man".
This is the personification of Nature's masculine traits -- the counterpart to 'Mother Nature'.

This "Green Man" face is even carved into the artistic designs of the woodwork in many centuries-old churches, especially in England.

The "Green Man" image on this knife indicates that it is more likely to date from the 1910s to early 1920s rather than later on.
