All About Pocket Knives

I’m looking for some seasoned opinions from the group.

I have a two-blade Case small toothpick. It does have a pattern stamp, but it’s not a configuration you see very often, which makes me pause when it comes to use.

The dilemma is this: my mom got this knife for me as a Christmas gift. Because of that, part of me would really like to carry it—very light duty only—as a reminder of her.

At the same time, I realize that an uncommon configuration like this isn’t replaceable, and once pocket wear happens, it’s permanent.

So I’m curious how others here handle situations like this. Do you lean toward preserving something uncommon, or do you feel that a meaningful gift earns its value by being carried and enjoyed, even if that means honest wear over time?

I appreciate any thoughts or experiences you’re willing to share.

Yes, most definitely. There is no way that any monetary increase in value will exceed the pleasure and honor you get from carrying it.

Besides, it’s like I always like to say, why preserve it and let somebody else have all the fun?

Just don’t lose it.

As you asked what l would do, l would carry it in a knife purse to prevent damage from pocket change & other objects. Whether you choose to use it or not is up to you. A second user can also be carried.

I voted" "It's your knife, you decide". But a nice leather slip to protect this one, and a second carry for heavier use sounds like just the ticket.

In my opinion, any concern about the unusual configuration being hard to replace is beside the point. The real value of the knife is the sentimental value of it being a gift from your mother. If it were the most common pattern Case makes, it would still have that same value. A knife like that should withstand decades of pocket carry and light use and occasional sharpening.

I would carry and use it occasionally just for the memories it will evoke. When it shows a little wear, that also evokes memories.

Of all the knives I've owned over the years, the ones I have enjoyed the most are the ones I've carried and used. I don't carry or use every knife I own, but the ones I do carry and use are the ones that give me the most satisfaction.

I agree with carrying it in a leather pocket slip. I do that on a daily basis.

Follow your heart, don't carry it! There are so many other knives you could carry and use without having to worry if they got damaged or lost. This knife is unique and special for several reasons, not the least of which is its association with your mother. As such, I recommend respecting its uniqueness by keeping it pristine and not carrying or using it. It is a special and uncommon knife that deserves to be honored with special care and preservation like a piece of fine art. Imagine how you'd feel if it got damaged or lost. Do not treat it as a common tool, buy another knife for EDC that does not have sentimental value.

The fact that you even asked this question indicates what you're really feeling in your heart. If you were the type of person who carries and uses "special" knives like this, you'd just do so without asking whether or not you should. So, you already know in your heart that you want to keep it pristine and not use it otherwise you wouldn't have asked.

My only concern would be losing it. But (knock on wood), I have had a good track record of not losing a knife. The wood scales will just get prettier with pocket time, just my 2 cents.

Is mom still alive? If yes than carry it by itself in your watch pocket when you visit her or most of the time if you live with her. In her presence use it, just not for chores you know are hard on knives. Carry a second knife for that. If she'd given you a piece of clothing and you never wore it that would be disrespectful and while she might not talk about she'd be hurt. Besides, if she sees you enjoy it she might give you more knives for Christmas in the future. If she never sees it with you do not expect to be given any more knives.

If mom has past than it does not matter much.

I am going to say it again I am not a knife collector. I do like what MSJ said about it coming from your Mother.
At one point in time I was a toy train collector I still most of what I bought. The only thing close to mint I have is a Budd car set. It was not run much. The first thing I do with all my trains is run them that is how I enjoy them.
To steal a phrase others use here just MHO. You have to do what you want to do.
That being said RR showed a Bulldog constitution knife a while back ago on one of the other threads, he wouldn’t sell me his(imagine that). I watched one on the bay for some time finally bought it for myself for Christmas, not the same and it’s MOP and in my pocket.

I carry heirloom knives from my ancestors on a regular basis. I like to think of the person who carried it before me, especially in moments when I could use a comforting presence.

I really appreciate all the perspectives shared here — that’s why I asked.

I should clarify one important point that affects how I’m thinking about this.

This knife was never released into production. It’s a two-blade Case small Toothpick, a configuration that did not enter catalog production and was never offered for sale. It represents a factory-level experimental configuration, not a variation of a known production pattern.

I’m not saying that automatically means it shouldn’t be carried — many of you made excellent points about honoring a meaningful gift through use — only that knowing this knife never became a production item makes the carry vs. preserve decision more complicated for me.

I genuinely appreciate all the thoughtful input and I’m taking it seriously.

IMHO, pocket wear can enhance a knife. Part of the beauty of a knife is its utility, and if that utility is uptapped, it's just a pile of metal and other materials.
