I saw this one on Ebay and want to get some opinions: I believe this '095 Tested XX Toothpick/Tickler is suffering from early onset outgassing. Do y'all agree?

And here's a couple screen shots.... HAPPY HOLIDAYS!--Robo

It might be a lot worse than "early onset" outgassing. The pitting you can see in the pictures all along the spine of the blade is a big clue. I find that the part that you can't see underneath the scales is an even bigger concern.

This. This is the unfortunate truth. I always think of the horror movie, though I've never seen it, "What Lies Beneath".
Spoiler alert: its a black liquid that's a byproduct of the plastisizers eating your knife

Yep, it's giving off clear warnings to stay away. I've been burnt by offgassing before, and won't own any more celluloid because of it. Not only will it destroy itself, but any knives in the area with it.

Definitely out gassing. I too will not buy or keep any celluloid knife in my collection. Not too fond of brass on knives either but that’s another discussion.

Here's a modern Parker-Frost I had.........
The cell outgassing destroyed the brass liners and the knife fell apart in two pieces!
Keep that in mind when you buy celluloid

That's quite impressive. Looks like it was soaked in battery acid.

There's a fantastic, in depth article about the celluloid "off gassing" phenomenon written by Dennis Ellingsen in the February 2000 issue of "Knife Magazine" for those of you that haven't read it. I don't currrently subscribe to the paper version, but do maintain an annual premium website membership which allows you to read the current edition as well as all of the archived magazines back to the begining when it started as "Knife World" in 1979. For $19.95 a year, I think it's a bargain and an invaluable resource. Check it out, if you'd like...
