I’m not familiar with that pattern number….what’s the “0” stand for? Or is it a capital letter "O" for "Overpriced"?

The knifedb.com has two pages of them. Apparently the 06254 was a SFO for Shepherd Hills cutlery in 2003-2004. Says they were called a “Rat Trapper”. It says “rat trappers have shorter bolsters and longer bone than other trappers of this era.” Some (but not all) versions had “Rat Trapper” etched on the master blade, and some were serialized.

In other words it sounds like they’re a throwback to the old Tested frame. Looks like it has a “Muskrat” master blade. They were made with several different handle covers, apparently each was limited to 500 pieces per year, but looks like they were made for at least two years so that would be 1000 of each handle covers. ::shrug:: The one being sold here was called “Wintergreen bone”. There are pictures of both 2003 and 2004 versions.

I searched the Case Collectors Club forum for “Rat Trapper” and got nothing. ::shrug:: ::hmm::

Ken

Edit: went back and searched for “06254”, and found 4 posts, basically confirming what I posted previously. (Different frame, muskrat blade, SFO for SHC).

I took a quick look at the seller's Ebay items and some of the prices do seem crazy. Too expensive to buy to enjoy, and not certain to be a good investment.

The OP listing price has been revised to $229.95. Still sounds high to me, but at least not ridiculously so. Not my kind of knife, so ::shrug:: .

Ran across this thread while catching up and agree with Ken that they add the 0 in front of the pattern number when there is a variation from the normal blade configuration. Here are a couple modern "Rat" Trappers I have picked up along the way with the Muskrat blade and shorter bolster, pictured alongside a Prime Stag Trapper with the standard Clip & frame. This variation may increase the value somewhat, but agree the price on the OP knife is still too high.

That frame could be a problem in the future.

Valid point, Harold! I actually never thought about that, but in this day and age, I can definitely see your concern.

It would easier to learn Latin than the Case pattern numbers and variations but not more fun. You Case aficionado’s must have numbers on the tip of your tongues whenever a blade is opened, almost like answering a Jeopardy question.

It took me a minute David, and I don't want to put words in Harold's mouth, but I assumed he was referring to this modern frame that resembles an earlier one being used to counterfeit and pass one off as an earlier example. I'm no expert on early Case knives, but could see how someone might try to do something like that.

I’m no expert on the Case trapper pattern, but from what I’ve read that 06254 version came out in the early 2000s. So twenty+ years ago - plenty of time for counterfeiters to do their thing, if they’re so inclined. So far I haven’t seen any. ::hmm:: Maybe they just haven’t caught on to the opportunity yet. ::shrug::

Most counterfeiters want to turn a $40 (or less) investment into a $200+ return. If the legit 06254’s are selling for the kind of money this one’s listed for, maybe that’s a deterrent.

Well at least they were offering a 5 dollar off coupon in the original listing.

Always liked the blade profile of the rat trappers ... ::tu::
