All About Pocket Knives

I'm still looking, but I think that knife is bkc# 282A. That would be 3 5/8" long and 2nd generation. The only 3 7/8" sowbellys I found were the Cutting Horse which never had the Pitbull Trademark etch. Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong. This particular knife has some better stag than normal, at least on the back handle.

Based on the stag handles I tend to think the knife may be a 1st generation knife. Front side is lighter than the back but this could be due to how the knife has been displayed over the years. The 282-a had an acorn shield and stag handles but it was 3 5/8 inches long not 3 7/8. You may want to email the seller and clarify the measurement. Also, Parkers Knife Collectors Encyclopedia does not specify what etching the knife had. The stag looks like 1st generation stag to me,but I could be wrong.

This is a 2nd generation Bulldog. The stag on a lot, not all, of the 2nd generation bulldogs is the same as on the 1sts. This knife is part of the tobacco series and was not produced in the 1st generation. A good tipoff is if you see a letter after the BKC# it is a good indication that it is a 2nd generation knife. Also most of the 2nd generation knives were supposedly produced in quantities of 36.

Second Generation knives are usually more rare, they used a tobacco leaf in most first generations and an acorn shield in the second generation for this series.

Randal, you bought it from me. I got the knife from, Mike Latham at CollectorKnives.net several months ago. Mike had it listed as 1st or 2nd generation; if Mike doesn't know I surly don't. I think Mike; is listed as (Knifeswapper) on AAPK, you could try to PM him. But as Hukk said ; with the acorn shield I tend to think, that it is a second generation.

As Olderdogs1 pointed out the A after the BKC number is another way to tell, Tom is very well versed on the 1st/2nd generation knives and I would take his word to the bank. There are many subtle diferences in the knives themselves and books 3 of the pocket knife traders guide shows many of these. This is the book with color pictures.

Also I feel that the confusion is mostly generated by the way the books are set up. The first and second generation knives are BOTH listed in the first generation section. The reader must know what Olderdogs1 has said, that the letter A, B, or C and so on indicates a second generation knife within the first generation section. There are also many differences, each series is different, different celluloid (Red Sparkle changing to red/black stripe), different shields and so on. There just a few things to know, then you'll know at a glance.

Well thank you luckypaul777, it sure does have some nice stag. your pics did'nt do it justice.i've got a collection of keepers that consist of choice knives that will be left to my son and grandson, you can be sure this lil gem will be in that group of keepers.i try to get as much info in the log book w/ descriptions and pics so they will know what they got. i've never sold any of my knives,i collect for keeps. so this bulldog won't see an auction block again for a long long time.you get any more as perty as this'en you just send a pic and pop off a price. again many thanks to you for the knife and you other fellas for the much wanted info..........TC
