All About Pocket Knives

Hello there, I would appreciate some help in dating this 4 inch long jack knife and possibly coming up with the model number. I believe that the first two digits of the model number were 29. The knife only has the Winchester Trade Mark tang stamp on the main blade. The blade thickness of the main blade is 10 gauge (0.1046"). In what years would Winchester have used this bone jigging pattern?

I've read that Winchester's economy line of pockets knives, introduced in the early 1930's, were referred to "Rough Black" design. Did that designation referred to the knife having rough black composition scales? Does the usage of 10 gauge main blade stock make this an economy knife? Did Winchester's economy line of knives also have bone scales, like the knife shown in the attached pictures?

According to Houston Price's "Guide",10th Edition, #2923 was a 4" Premium Stockman and the only stockman in the 29-- series. It is certainly not an economy model; the value given for a mint example was $240 in 1991. The knife should have a clip and spey blade. Although it says "stag" I think they called their jigged bone stag, "Real" Winchesters were made from 1919-1942 so it could be at least 83 years old. Good luck with it. J.O'.

Hi Ridgegrass, thanks for the reply. Since my knife doesn't have a spey blade it has to be some other model number. I think it might be something like a 2976 or 2982. Both of these models (2976 and 2982) have a combination of a large clip and a pen blade. Unfortunately, without photos of these two knives I can't ID mine.
