All About Pocket Knives

I have found Robeson Cutlery to be very good quality, so I bought another one.


What would be your guesstimate when it was made?

Is it unusual to have one side with 3 pins and the other 5? Rehandle?

I would say your grand old knife has lost a shield or badge along the way.
That's a great old packer, I think.

That is it exactly. It had a pinned shield which got lost, and an earlier user kept carrying it. A LOT.
It has had a lot of wear on the blades and the handles, and the effect has made those bone handles even more beautiful!
That's a keeper right there!

Thanks to FRJ and Reverend for their responses. I did not realize it
was missing it's shield. Still a very solid knife. Now that is is
cleaned up I will sharpen it today and add it to my EDC for a
few days.

I originally thought it might be from around 1939 but I did a
AI search and it said because of the composition of the handles
it more likely was from the 1950's.

It actually looks like an “interframe” pattern, which had wrap-around bolsters and liners that held the handle slabs in place without the need for pins, at all, but I’ve never seen a bone handled one before. Maybe the bone has shrunk and exposed the liners to create that illusion.

I don't think my knife is bone. It looks more like a composite material. I was sharpening the knife and the main
blade seemed a little loose ( wobble). It seemed like there was a little protrusion of a pin. I clamped it
up slightly and the pin disappeared.

I have been wrong a few times this week. Old age peaking out!

I am still not certain of it's age. The tang stamp shows it might be from the late 1930's, When
did Robeson start using composite material?

Based on the stamp on the master, which is the only one that matters, 1922-1939, per Tom Kalcevic’s published data.
