All About Pocket Knives

I posted this on general knife discussion but it was recommended that I post it here.

Many years ago a friend of mine who has long since passed away gave me this old toothpick that was missing the blade. I believe he said it was from the 60’s. I was in hopes of having it restored and sent it to Case but the knife was returned with a letter that said due to the age of the knife they did not have replacement parts and could not help.

I don’t know where the pinned shield went and for the life of me can not find it. Anyway does anyone know where I can have this knife restored or would it cost more than it would be worth. I believe a blade from a newer toothpick would fit maybe needing to be hand fitted but I believe it can be done. Have a great day everyone

Since sometime in late 1970’s Case has retooled or discontinued every pattern I know of. That means they’re no longer producing the metal parts that fit older knives. Case repair for the most part won’t have parts to repair a knife that old. They also stopped pinning shields on all regular production knives. I think they still pin Case Select and premium knives like the Ruple collaborations (Bose collaborations before that).

You haven’t said what your objective is for the knife. If it’s to restore its collector value the only way to do so is to replace the blade and re-pin the shield with period correct parts. If it was mine I’d be on the lookout on eBay etc for a “donor” knife from the period, with broken or missing handle covers or spring, but with an intact shield and mostly full blade. Parts from that donor knife and yours combined together would result in an intact collectable knife.

Any “retrofitting” will likely be costly and the end result will have little or no collector value. (Most knife mechanics charge by the hour - retrofitting means more time = $$). However if done correctly the result could be a functional, usable EDC. If that’s the objective I recommend looking through posts in the Knife Repair forum, find someone(s) who does blade replacement. Send them a PM or email explaining what you want done, request a quote and go from there.
