All About Pocket Knives

In my opinion the old Buck 110 is the best knife ever produced for what you get for your money. Let's hear your all's opinions.

I agree for a lock back hunter but for a fixed I'll go with the Marble line.In the slipjoint line of knives not for pretty but for functionality and durable the Schrade Oldtimer line. Now pretty GEC just my thoughts

Sorta like asking a group of new mothers who has the prettiest baby.

Don’t think you will beat the quality of Moki and Mcusta and their knives won’t break the bank, in most cases, they have some pretty expensive knives too.
Moki makes all the slip joints for Falkniven and those are some VERY nice knives.

I think a Buck knife is a fine knife but I have found one that I prefer over it.
It is a Remington? and I don't remember who made it but I don't think Remington did.
You're talking about larger knives and this is one that I like to carry along with a few others that I think are better suited for me than the Buck.
While I'm at it I would also like to suggest this Camillus Swing Guard.
And I would be remiss if I didn't mention a real hunter, the great old swell center hunter by American Shear & Knife.
However, if you just want a nice little carry that you can depend on I think a sweet little Waterville will serve you well.

Fixed Blade: Tops

Standard Lock Back: Buck

Modern One Hand Openers: Spyderco and Hogue

Traditional Slip Joints: Great Eastern Cutlery and I’ve heard some very good things about Cooper Cutlery here lately. No personal experience with them though.

Automatic Knives: Protech and Hogue

I also agree with Mark’s comments about Moki.

I have the utmost confidence in any knife designed by A. G. Russell as well but they don’t actually make the knives that he designed. Not anymore anyway. They are however, factory made.

I always remember my papaw and uncle who were my heroes always carrying Oldtimer pocket knives. They were farmers and they used and abused their knives so they were always in rough shape with broken tips lots of times from prying or using as a screwdriver but they would last until they would eventually lose them and buy another. They didn't have a certain pattern but it was always an Oldtimer in their pocket. I took for granted growing up being able to go in Walmart and spend 15 bucks and walk out with a usa Uncle Henry or Oldtimer. I wish that was still the case.

Here's a few others that I like quite a bit.

These are really nice larger knives that lock. The Schrade is 4 3/4" and the Western is 4 3/8".
And methadoneman, the Schrade is an Old Timer, that'll cheer you up right there.

The best is (was) probably a Scrade 8OT made in the USA

The Old Timer had the usual brown Delrin but Musket Man put on the canvas Micarta covers.

"The best knife" all depends upon what you want to use it for. I prefer a medium-to-large Stockman, but not because I think that it is the "best". I simply like them.
But if I need to remove a broken key from a lock, I have an old worn Queen that works wonders.
If I am skinning an animal, I want one of my many folding hunters or a fixed blade.
If I am picking out a splinter, I use my tiny Cattaraugus whittler or the Boker Congress that my Father-in-law gave me.
If I need to turn a screw, the best knife is an electrician's knife or a Swiss Army knife.
Sometimes my Leatherman knife is the best for a tough job.
If I am cutting caulk off of brick at work, the "best" knife is a Chinese-made knife that I keep in my truck, and consider to be disposable.
If I want to whittle, I use the Case Trapper that my Dad gave me.

There are a lot of different "bests", because there are a lot of different uses for a knife.

I would second that. It seems that all of the manufacturers have had their good and bad points. Then you have to define the word BEST. Best fit; best finish; best design; best handles; best edge holding, etc.. Too many variables for me!
That being said; if l had to pick just one, l would opt for CRKT. I have several of their knives and they score on all categories. JMHO.

Anything Queen.

I would have to go with Cattaraugus, New York Knife Co., Schrade Walden, and Robeson for old manufacturers. Modern knives, I'd go with Benchmade, Hinderer and Heretic for quality control and design reasons.

I have many old Case knives from the 40's through the 70's that fit the bill as best factory made knives. Schrade and Buck also have some of my favorites.

But probably one of my all time favorites is my Kershaw 1050. What a beast of a knife, and very well made fit and finish.

It's really impossible for me to pick though, as there are so many great knives and factories out there. Queen, Schatt & Morgan, Randall. But I don't swim in those waters, as they are just too expensive for me to feel comfortable using. I do love them all though!

I really enjoyed reading everyone's responses to this. There were knives mentioned that I had forgotten about and knives I didn't know about but will check out now. Thanks for replying guys.

Fighting Rooster's are some of the best pocket knifes made. At least till the celluloid ones start gassing. Lol
