Vintage knife

What is the criteria for listing a knife as vintage? if it is age how old does need to be?

The consensus seems to be the word "vintage" should be accompanied by a year or a timeframe. Could be vintage 1920, vintage 2024, or vintage WWII for examples

How old is a vintage knife?
Generally speaking, an art knife that is not more than 25 years old is considered Contemporary. An art knife that is between 25 and 50 years old would be considered Vintage. An Art Knife between 50 and 75 years old would be considered Semi-antique and an art knife older than 75 years would be considered Antique.

Welcome to the forum, Klt.
I think your best strategy would to use words that convey a more precise meaning. If you know that a knife was made before 1990, for example, just say that it was made before 1990.
If you follow Ken's link, you will see some good discussion about the word
vintage and see why some of us are not too fond of it.

Yes, it is a word so abused that it almost has no meaning.

I believe "vintage" used to have a connotation that something was of a certain quality that stood the test of time, but nowadays it basically just means something is old.
I have an 80 year old acquaintance who deals in antique furniture. He insists that something must be at least 100 years old to qualify as "antique"

Vintage: Anything I could have had as a kid. That doesn't really narrow it down does it, but if it doesn't meet that criteria to me it ain't vintage enough.

OC, totally agree. Antique shops and the internet are constantly abusing "earlY" and "vintage". The words have no real meaning in knife collecting. J.O'.

Same to the verbiage “museum quality” no real significance but a marketing tool. “rare” is also overused, seem some listings of “rare” knives that they only thing rare about em is it rare someone would want it. lol.
