All About Pocket Knives

OK, been collection for some time and ive been telling people for years that you cant get a dime for these or anything with company logo's! And on top of it being in the top 2 of ugliest knives ever made and not cause its a hawkbill. This monstrosity sold for $530 on fleecebay. hope the link comes through. OK, Still going crazy! Ive laugh at these, Turned them down. This is a $30 knife. Not a $530 knife! RARE! WHO CARES!! Alright, Everybody Chime IN Now! Agree/Disagree? RED

Was there a reserve? Maybe somebody needed to fill a hole in their JD collection and put in a crazy big number thinking it would never get that high but it did I don’t get too worked up over anything on eBay anymore, in the same category as network news.

On Facebook live auctions, I have seen modern Case hawkbills with garishly colored Delrin handles go for crazy money - like $400. I also beleive that many of the John Deere Case release are scarce and sought after. I have also seen some of the Case "Ford Motor" modern knives go for crazy money.

You know what "they" say. It's only worth what somebody is willing to pay.

And when it comes to auctions, a lot of people have a lot more $$$ than they do sense,

A lot of the time when you see these crazy insane prices for a knife that should never bring that much, it turns out it is a shill bidding account that ran the price up, so they know how high the other bidder was willing to go.

Then in 2 weeks you'll see the knife listed for sale with a Buy-It-Now price of what the other bidder's max was, instead of as an auction. It's tricks of the trade for people who use ebay as a full-time job.

That's an interesting take, I never thought of it from that perspective - thanks for sharing it.
In this case the bidding looked pretty legit, and I saw another JD hawkbill sold for $450 much higher than other models, so maybe there is something we don't know here. Still, I don't get it for that knife.

Case hawkbills in general have gone insane lately. Regardless of tang stamp.

That is insane for that knife. Not sure what to think. I see a lot of newer Case knives bringing some insane money, PBJ, Sea Dragon, etc. These are selling out when they drop like GEC knives do. I just don’t understand how knives made in the thousands can command such high dollars. In fact many other Case knives that are made by the many thousands are costing as much or more than GEC knives. Inflation, or what?

I don’t dabble in collecting newer (post-1980) knives, but I do follow to some extent what’s going on in the hobby. FWIW Case has been at the forefront of creating collectable knives, 1 of xxx, limited editions etc for 50 years. I think some collectors of newer knives have moved to collecting those Case “made-to-be-collectables”, either in place of or instead of GECs. The key is those are generally not “made in thousands”. Certainly not all of the GEC collectors, but enough of them and newer collectors participating in Fakebook and other auctions to drive up prices for Case PBJ, Sea Dragon, Lizard skin, etc in the secondary market.

Plus as Steve alluded to there’s a robust collector market for discontinued Case patterns, like the Hawkbill, 64047P, 6380, and others. I used to pick up some of them when a bargain popped up - rarely see any such bargains now.

Thanks Ken, I was referring to the standard every day knives that Case makes in the thousands and not the limited edition knives like you see for sale. I use to collect a few of the “limited edition” knives myself since they were limited production knives but even some of them are limited in numbers up to 3000.
My Case life member number is in the 9000’s so the Case Collector’s Club knives, which are made for collectors, are made in pretty high numbers as well. I have heard about the Facebook auctions and the outrageous prices that knives go for on there, but I have not seen them. I don’t have a Facebook page yet.
I’m still puzzled by the prices on the new Case knives compared to GEC, I still don’t get it.
