All About Pocket Knives

Hey guys, was was listing this and realized it has a different number stamped on it than any other of the toothpick that i see? Its a 2001 tiny toothpick in lizard as you can see but the number is O61096, instead of 610096 that I see on others. Is this a mistake stamping? And the first digit seems to be an upper case O and not the number 0? HEP ME! RED

Hello Red, The Zero at the beginning of the pattern number signifies a variation of that pattern. In the case of your knife, the variation is the tipped vs a normal bolster. You may also see the 0 at the beginning of the pattern number when there is a different blade design from normal. I have a few 6254 trappers with a muskrat blade instead of the normal clip, with 06254 as the pattern number.

"In the past, Case has added one or two zeros to an original pattern number to signify a variation of an existing pattern. These zeros can be found before the first digit, or between the blade identification number, and the original factory pattern number".

Well OK... Never thought about that. I was thinking more that the material was made of something different on the lizard skin knives? Damn, I was hoping my knife might be worth more, but that never seems to be the case! But.. you have any idea why they used the short bolster on very few? dont think it has anything to do with the lizard skin seeing that others ive encountered have the regular bolsters? Maybe the year? Wondering how i explain that if i sell it? WELL, in the middle of writing i switched over to flea bay and seen that the short bolsters were on ones made 2000 and on as far as i can see, although still using the long bolster on those too. What say you...

I think the majority of these were made in 2001 and probably a few different handle materials & colors more recently. Below is a link to sold listings where you will see several examples. Since the early 2000s, Case likes to mix it up and try a lot of new things to see what sells. Shepherd Hills Cutlery is one of the biggest Case dealers and is responsible for a lot of these variations they probably have made as SFOs, such as the 5 blade Beast Trappers, 4 blade Texas Muskrats, 51 pattern swing guard Jaguars, Pink Lady Case, etc... And they may have had a hand in the tipped bolster toothpicks as well.
