Customizing

Hey, I recently retired and am customizing knives as a hobby. I am having a problem with the sandpaper staining/smudging into the wood, bone, and stone I make my scales with. I tried going to red paper and purple paper but still my scales get messed up, don't know if it's from the dye in the paper or the minerals breaking down into fine powder and then into a stain. So, if anyone can advise me on how not to screw up my work I would very much appreciate it.

I use Brasso to remove the stains left behind by sanding.

Do you have any pictures of what the staining looks like?
