Tightening Tool

Does anyone know if they make a tool to tighten this nut on a fixed blade, or do I need to make one? I figure I can use an old straight blade screwdriver and grind the center of the tip out, then make 2 flat sides on the handle so I can put a wrench on it to snug it up.

I would assume there is a tool for that purpose.
I have these round jawed pliers that would probably work in a pinch.
Searching for the brand and the model number might get you the tool if that is what you want.

I would assume there is a tool for that purpose.
I have these round jawed pliers that would probably work in a pinch.
Searching for the brand and the model number might get you the tool if that is what you want.

The tool is a type of spanner. There was a guy on eBay, selling spanners for fixed blade knives, several years ago. I believe he had them made. I bought one but they were made of thin steel and I don’t think they were properly hardened because the prongs bent too easily.
I made a spanner from a large screwdriver. It is now my go to tool for fixed blades.
You are right, they are easy to make from a large screwdriver.

For an actual tool you may have to contact a cutlery that still makes fixed blades with pommel nuts. I know when I was in manufacturing we had to make some of our own tools. There just wasn’t enough demand for them to support a company making them for sale to us. It would have been a very small market. This might be a situation like that.

Having been a fixed blade guy for over sixty years I have made several tools that do the job with no damage to the slots. I take a screwdriver of the proper width and grind the tip down until it is a good fit in the width of the slots in the nut then I used a muffler cutting tool to make the gap in the middle to fit over the tang. Muffler cutting tools are simply 3-4" diameter abrasive discs that are about 1/8" thick and mounted in a mandrel. I have an air powered one but you can use them in a drill also. Remington fixed blade are a pain to do since the slot in the pommel nut is very thin and on many the pommel is rounded after the nut is installed so tightening the nut make the radius of the nut and pommel not matched. All flat end pommels are easy to tighten with the tools I have made.

These were all over eBay and other Internet sites a few years ago, I don't see them available now
It is the best design as there are several choices in spacing depending on your knife.
Make one like this if you can't find one, you'll be glad you did!

In my opinion Dimitri those are junk. They are too thin and will bugger the pommel nuts since they don't fit the pommel nut slots perfectly. Mine made od screwdrivers are much thicker and match the slots nearly perfectly or perfectly and do not mess up the slots in the pommel nuts. Much easier to make my design than one of those cheap things.

Old screwdrivers are in plentiful supply at most yard sales for cheap money. I would assume most here have access to a vise, bench grinder, and an assortment of files.
All you need to make an assortment of pommel nut spanners. Usually you can find a file with teeth on the side that is the correct width to cut the middle slot. Most screwdrivers are made of softer metal than files.JMHO.
