All About Pocket Knives

I just bought a Spyderco Police P.I.G knife from 1984 I believe, it is a rare and expensive knife but it has some scratches on the handle and it could use a resharpening. It is a serateded edge, I called Spyderco and asked if they do sharpening and they in fact do offer that service but no refinishing the blade or handle.

Would this reduce the value of the knife if the factory is the one that does the resharpening?

Would it reduce the value if I could find someone that knows what they are doing to remove or reduce the scratches on the handle?

Any help in this I would greatly appreciate.

In my opinion, it depends on what you plan to do with the knife. If you don’t plan to sell it then risking a reduction in value is kind of a moot point.

If selling, I think it would depend on the individual buyer. Some buyers might want it left as is and some might like it better cleaned up.

I don’t think anybody is going to frown on a factory re-sharpening.

If the knife were mine and I planned to sell it, I would sell it in its current condition and let the buyer decide. It’s too much of a hassle to have it all cleaned up without knowing who the buyer is and what they prefer. The buyer can have it polished up and sharpened if that’s what they want. Or not.
