All About Pocket Knives

Hi friends,

First time poster long time reader of these forums. Finally bit the bullet and signed up.
I have this really interesting Rodgers knife, etched (U) OMAHA (U). It's like a dual blade melon tester. Can't find it anywhere and unfortunately I havent expanded by book collection to include anything worth while on English knives.

Your feedback would be well appreciated, in terms of what it is and the history on it. Thank you kindly in advance!

Knice old knife and handles. I'm not much help with info but welcome.

As you stated made in England. Somewhere the stamps on the back of the blade are referenced and help with the date. The Omaha stamp I assume would be for a company that ordered these with their name stamped on the blade. Very cool knife all around!

Not being Jewish, I can't speak to it's use, but I wonder if it's made to dispatch animals in a Kosher style ? Melon testers are also called Salami knives. J.O'.

Your statement mentioning "dispatch animals in a Kosher style", reminded me of one of my Father-in- law's stories concerning his "custom kill" meat business. When he went "big time" and had a new addition to his meat business, he added a "special Kosher kill" box to serve the Jewish community at certain times. The Rabbi would slaughter the critter, cattle or sheep, in the special head catch provided for them to do their thing. Grandpa didn't really like their procedure and talked the, as he called the rabbi, "a bit liberal", into allowing him to dispatch the animal first and then the "bleeding" could take place. He had respect for the live animals that were being turned into table fare at his business, he didn't want any to suffer. I never thought to ask what type of knife was used in the "Kosher kill" by the Rabbi.
Just something that jogged my memory.

I would dispatch a salami with that knife any day. Very nice. And I would like to buy it.

This thread made me curious about the kosher kill knives and found a site (see link above) that had some info as well as knives for sale.

A kosher salami / citrus knife thats interesting! I am still struggling to find any business from that time period called "Omaha". Ultimately the goal is to sell it once I have the appropriate information. It does look a lot like Case's 6296X. Im going to do a bit of a dive into the Kosher U

I used to buy cow hearts for my Physiology students to dissect. If the Rabbi beat me to the day's slaughter the hearts were always slit open which rendered them useless for my labs.
My Great-aunt Genevieve used to skewer her poultry with a long needle-like ice-pick to the heart while gently petting the bird. I remember it was super quick and bloodless. The bird would just drop his head and be quietly dead, no flopping around. She said she learned it from their Jewish neighbor lady in Philadelphia. J.O'
