All About Pocket Knives

Would a Kershaw Scallion be called a "tactical " knife? Or what? Just wondered.

Maybe a tiny tactical? The pocket clip is almost identical to the deep ride clip I have on my Tyrade. That is one of the very few problems I have with a kershaw knife as I like deep ride so that noone knows you are carrying a knife. The wide, shiny clip practically screams "KNIFE HERE"!

I to under stand the feeling of KNIFE HERE.

I saw one but not have one YET. I am talking about Kershaw and Snap-on tools. You can get one from the Snap-on truck driver.
It's a belt clip that looks like a small opened end and box wrench.
So all people see is a small wrench hanging out of you pocket.
I think it's a kool idea and it comes with a Kershaw knife too.

That belt clip is a great idea and nice looking too. Any idea of the price of the knife from the Snap-On guy? It looks like a nice one.

it's a tactical for fighting again paper and letters
just a default : the torsion bar is a little delicate, i break it twice because this knive is very addictive , open, close, open, close. So Kershaw send me twice new torsion bar, very good after sales services.

I have the Kershaw Jeep Scallion and there's nothing tactical about it.

Good question. Kinda like asking for the definition of a sports car or what makes a woman sexy. Hard to describe but you definately know it when you see it.

I'll take a "stab" at it (Pun intended)

1. One hand opening capability (thumb stud or thumb opening e.g.Spyderco)
2. Rapidly accessable (pocket clip)
3. Aggresive blade design (whatever the heck that means)
4. Blade length sufficient to penetrate to vital organs

does the advertising on a knife make it less "tactical"? does it have to be black or camo to be "tactical"? or does it have to be named (insert any of the provocative names given to mall ninja knives) my thinking is any pointy tool you can use becomes a tactical weapon if so deployed. jmo

IMHO...

A tactical knife is an edged tool designed to be used in a multi-mission Tactical role. It is different than the combat/fighting knives in that a modern tactical knife is designed for a broader range of uses than just as a bayonet or fighting knife.

With the above definition every knife out there can be a tactical knife. But some knives are better at preforming certain tasks then others. I wouldn't want to use the Scallion to pry at something and without a serrated edge it wouldn't cut some material as well as it would others.

I think you need a more versatile knife with a combo edge and a strong locking mechanism if it is a folder in order to be considered a "tactical" knife. Belt/pocket clip or sheath doesn't matter, only if you are able to draw the knife out easily to employ it. (If your having to use two hands, then you are probable using a sword or a classical pocket knife). Automatic, assist-auto, thumb tab/screw, or finger pull all become part of a knife's design function and is a personal preference. There are those who prefer a ring handle to pull a knife easily into the palm without having to use the thumb to employ the blade.

A good tactical knife will also have high impact handle material, usually ergonomically engineered so as to fit into the palm in several different ways. Again, this is so the knife can be used for multiple tasks. It doesn't matter what design or who's name is on the handle.

And if you have to use a knife for defense, I would not want to have to use something as small as the scallion, especially if my opponent is welding something the size of an MOD Nightwing or maybe a large club.

Really I guess its to each his own. If you want to consider the scallion as a tactical knife, then that's your preference. I carry a CRKT Ashworth Turtle in my pocket as a money clip. I use the balde to open envelopes, boxes, cut string, paper and have used its tip a small screw driver as well as a pry to pull a splinter out. Maybe I should begin referring to it as the Tactical Turtle

Anyways, that's just my opinion and you know what is said about opinions...Everybody has one.

I also have a Kershaw Jeep.

I have it on my key-chain.

Works fine and the sissors is sharp.

A kool tool for any ones key-chain.

My Colt Python .357 is my tactical weapon of choice. Though I can't use it as a screwdriver, I won't fear any other tactical weapon my opponent pulls on me. . But on a serious note, I don't have any tactical knives that I know of. I sure like the way the Kershaw Rainbow looks. There again I guess it's just the looks. Are they a knife that will hold up to everyday carry and tasks? I might like to edc one once in awhile. Smoke

Smoke if you want I can ship you my EDC 1660 Rainbow as a lonner. She work super good for me. But then I don't cut any steel with her cus shes a lady and she looks so dang gone good.

Ken, you are a true gentleman but I wouldn't think of separating you from her! The Kershaw rainbow's are pretty, and I may just have to pick one up for myself. I am always looking for any reason to justify a new knife. The unique colors of the Kershaw's are as good a reason as I can think of right now! They aren't made in China are they????

All the assisted opening Kershaws are made in Oregon, USA.
