All About Pocket Knives

Hello,
Today I received my knives back from a well reviewed mail-in sharpening service and I can't describe my disappointment. The bevels from both knives have been smoothed and turned into one long convex grind. To be fair, the PM2 is sharp enough to cleanly slice paper, but the CRK is hardly sharper than it was when I sent it in (it had an okay working edge, I wanted it out-of-the-box sharp). I feely disappointed.
How can I fix it by myself? Thanks in advance!

I sorry that happened, it is disappointing when you pay for what’s supposed to be a good service and it comes back wrong. That edge is often a result of a loose(non back supported) section of a sanding belt being used. It’s referred to as an Appleseed edge by some and is very durable but like you I like a factory style bevel. A guided rod sharpener will make it more like a factory edge or hand sharpening on a stone or diamond. I hand sharpen all mine (freehand) and even re-profile some for carving freehand but it takes practice.

Not that sending knives to a sharpening service is a bad thing but I suppose you won’t be doing that anymore.

Hunker down and do some serious research on sharpening techniques. Then pick one and teach yourself to use it properly. It might take some patience but you’ll be glad you did in the long run.

There are many ways to reprofile an edge. Only you can determine which method works best for you.

Like many I like to hand sharpen my knives, but that is not for everyone.
I have a Gatco guided sharpening system that I use when I want those bevels to be perfect. It works similar to the Lansky, and I recommend a guided sharpening system like those to anyone who wants to sharpen their own knives.

You're getting some good advice here, theodorewilson.
Research and choose a mechanism or a good 8" carborundum stone and give sharpening a serious go.
Use funky flea market knives or yard sale knives to start with. You can do it.
Many of us do and you won't regret doing so yourself.

No way I would ever let a sanding belt touch a knife.
