A very happy new year to you.
I am new to this forum, and I don't know a lot about knives, but I love my collection of Letherman and Victorinox.
I just bought my first Buck 110, and I am very happy with it.
I am surprised that there is no nail nick on it / groove for the thumb nail.
I have searched the internet and cannot find any pictures without nail nick / groove for the thumb nail.
Can you tell me why?
Is my model a genuine Buck?
Is my model the one called Ranger?
Thank you for your time from a newcomer.

My initial thoughts are -
1. Email them at [email protected], and ask.
2. There appears to be adequate room to “pinch” the blade between the fingers and pull it open, so maybe they eliminated the nail nick as a cost reduction.
3. Buck now makes an automatic version of the 110, on which there is no nail nick on the blade. Maybe they mixed up the blades and you got a factory error.

I’m going with option 1 if it was mine. That should get you an answer in any case.

pure speculation is that a Buck 110 auto (switchblade) blade that has no nail nick was incorrectly used on your knife

based on the box and knife I’d say yes.

no, the Ranger is the 112 model.

I don't have a 110 Auto but I do have a 112 Auto. Both models have a cutout in the blade tang where the firing button locks into when closed.

nice “elite” Rick - I gave those to my sons for Christmas and after 10,456 firings this week they still operate like new

Ha! Not hard to believe. Thanks for the compliment. They truly are sweet knives. Very good choice for gifts.

I’m jealous. The 110 has no need for a nail nick. It just collects crud.

When introduced in 1972, the 112 models didn’t have nail nicks for several years. I’m inclined to say that they added the nail nicks to the 112 in 1981 but that might not be correct. So yes, there were a lot of 112’s made without nail nicks.

I don’t know if the 110 had a nail nick when introduced or not but I know they have had them for a long time and the 110 in question is a brand new knife of recent production.

I suspect you have a 110 that was a mistake by the factory. 110’s from the beginning have had a nail nick. As mentioned the recent exception has been the factory produced Auto. As mentioned maybe a blade intended for use in an auto or missed a step in the manufacturing process. Likely a scarce variety a Buck 110 collector would treasure. If they offer a replacement I would decline and keep the documentation with the knife.

I'd buy it or trade for it...

I’m guessing it was a Web Special or a Web Exclusive only available on the Buck website until sold out. Buck does that kind of thing fairly often and a 110 without a nail nick would have been a pretty popular offering.

They also do what they call Stealth Runs. Could be one of those as well but I don’t know if they had started the Stealth Run program when that date label was put on the box. The Stealth Runs are fairly new so that might be cutting it close.

I was looking on their website and notice that the 110 hunter with a drop point blade doesn't have a nail nick. I never use the nail nick on mine just pinch it with thumb and finger it ain't as if a lockback has that much snap.

Any chance this could be for a non-US market?

I know a lot of the Bantams without thumb studs, as well as Spitfires without the holes were made for export--i.e Canada.

I live in Europe / Denmark, so you can be right

No nick 112’s were common.

No nick 110’s ? I’ve never seen a clip point no nick. Drop point no nicks were definitively available at times.

I think it is a factory error please let us know what you find out.

It looks like that tang stamp is engraved rather than stamped. That's a problem. I've seen some etched tang stamps on some of the exotic steels, but as far as I know all run of the mill 110 blades are stamped.
