All About Pocket Knives

I have a three Case knives with bone scales (2 bone-stag, and 1 amber bone) that I have used for field dressing deer. I have noticed that on all of them, the darker colors on the scales have faded noticeably (especially on the side where my thumb rests) after I use them on deer. Is there something in blood or fat that dulls or fades bone scales? I wear nitrile gloves when I process animals, would that have an effect? Has anyone else had this happen with their knives?

You did not say, but I assume your experience is with bone or stag covers? Bone, and some stag covers are dyed. With use, many dye colors will fade. Happens on my EDC knives over time. Happens with blue jeans too.

My new/old stock Case Med Stockman has amber jigged bone scales and it apparently sat in a display case that had some direct sunlight because the scale on the shield side are 4 or 5 shades lighter than the other side. I also have a Case Redbone small stockman that the scales are the same shade of very light red, while my buddy has the same knife and his scales are considerably darker. As I carry them, I am sure both knives will fade some more. That just means that when I am gone and the grand kids are sorting thru my pocket knives they well know that I enjoyed and used them.
