Case XX 10 Dot Jack Knife

Picked this 10 dot up at a local antique store yesterday. Scales are in great show. Walks and talks like no other, but the blade are in need of some help. Should I have them cleaned or leave it the way it is?

Other than rubbing the spots with a number 2 pencil lead, I’d leave the blades alone. I like patina, and there’s really nothing much else that can be done other than buffing, which removes metal and softens its original crisp edges. In general, buffing will reduce its collector value.
After you work it with the pencil lead you can wipe it with a metal preservative, or if you’re going to carry it just let that wonderful carbon steel patina grow! It will itself retard red rust.

I would clean the spots with a lead pencil (as mentioned) and give the
blades a little bit more forced patina. I think it will even out the
colors on the blade and give it even more protection.

That's a fine old Case! Looks like the blades have most or maybe all of their original metal. Clean it up, put a good edge on the blades as the others fellers suggested and carry ti proudly!

Not the eraser, but the pencil lead.
The graphite is harder then rust, but softer than the steel.

Thanks for the correction. I'll see if I can dig out a no. 2 pencil somewhere in a junk drawer.

Quick little update. Used a no. 2 pencil and a polishing rag and cleaned it up. Gonna leave it this way.

It looks awesome! I use the #2 Pencil Spa Treatment often, it works like a charm.

Way to go, looks excellent now, as it should be. And will look even better when ya start getting some patina going. Beauty.
