All About Pocket Knives

Inherited this from my gramps who passed this year. Little bit of black on the edge of the blade that I'm trying to get off but I'm having trouble. I know there's some pits and grooves on the end of the knife but honestly I'd kind of like to keep them because he carried this in his pocket for years and those are from when he did electrical work with me. I'm unsure of the date I'm seeing a lot of conflicting things on Google and don't know a lot about knives. I would just kind of like to be able to carry this for the rest of my life as well, any advice would be greatly appreciated as far as cleaning and care and also the year.

You’re fortunate to have a knife that your grandfather carried and used. It has carbon steel (CV) blades (not stainless) so you’ll need to care for it accordingly. If not it may rust. After use you should wipe off and moisture or liquids and wipe the blade with a lightweight oil on a soft cotton cloth. Over time it will develop what is called “patina”, which is actually a form of iron oxide but grayish, not rust-red. The patina will help retard red rust. The grayish spots on the blade of your knife looks like the beginning of patina, which in time will spread to cover the entire blade. (It will come off the edge with sharpening.). Put a drop of lightweight oil into the joint every month or so, and work the blade open and closed a few times to spread it into the joint.

Thanks so much Ken! I just found out this wasn't his one he had for years, but he did carry this one the last few years. He has a bigger one that is older, I got them mixed up. And yes, I am very thankful and fortunate to have one of his favorite items. I'm sure I'll probably never get it as sharp as he did, but I hope he would be happy that I'm making sure it's taken care of properly. Again, thanks so much for the info!

You may want to "force" a patina on the knives if you are going to use and
carry them. Google or looking up how to make patina on this site will
help you out. I am particular about trying to remember to wipe my
CV knives after use but sometimes it does not happen.

Nice knife. Those yellow handled knives are always good to use
because in the field you can see where you left it
