All About Pocket Knives

Hi all! I’m looking into buying my boyfriend a pocket knife for Christmas. His last knife was confiscated by TSA after he accidentally brought it to the airport, and I can tell he’s been missing having one. That said, I know nothing about what is good to look for in a pocket knife. We watched some forged in fire episodes together and he always commented on how pretty all the Damascus blades were, so something Damascus maybe? Looking for any recommendations of trustworthy shops, useful specifications (size, handle material, shape, stuff like that!), and any other tips. Thank you!

Damascus is gorgeous, but most of the Damascus blades you see are cheap pieces of crap.

You ask a tough question, as love for a pocket knife is a very subjective thing. Some people rave over styles of knives that I do not care for, and vice-versa.
Here are some questions that might steer you in a direction:

Do you know if he likes more modern "flipper" knives, or traditional?

Multi-blade or single blade?

Pocket clip - Yes or No?

As far as handle materials, man made or natural?

Would he value an imported knife as much as one made in his home country?

Lastly, knives are different sizes and shapes because hands come in all different sizes. Small knives disappear in my old paws, but at some point we all find knives that are too big and klunky to use comfortably.

Once you start getting dialed in on a size, style, and type of knife, then we can begin steering you in a direction.

You can't go wrong with a Swiss Army knife. A knife for every budget and a knife that will be used and not just put up and forgotten about. Many styles to pick from. A good place to start shopping.

If he liked the knife he previously had, I'd start there and consider trying to find one like that as a replacement. Do you know what he had?

I agree, start the conversation with whether he would like to have something like what he lost. The AAPK member stores have a broad selection of all kinds of knives at various price points. Sit down with him and browse the selections there to see what he likes, and then proceed from there.

they will start "confiscating" jewelry.

A good starting point would be, how much would you like spend, what did the previous knife look like and what are his interests (outdoors, sports, hobbies, etc)?
