I found a small knife 2 1/4 inches closed...It's unusual as It has one small blade & a small pencil that that can be unscrewed and lead added
this knife was made by the Imperial knife company and the tang stamp looks to be number 12# between 1956-1988 see below
https://www.americanedgeknives.com/blog ... ng-stamps/
The knife has the General Electric logo & College Bowl samped in red on the handle thinking this would be a football game
I found that it was a contest sponosored by G.E. starting 1953-1970 first in radio then on television
The contest was between 2 selected colleges; with a planel of four students who would answer questions playing for grants
Robert Earle was game show host

I couldn't find another knife anywhere just curious if any out there ::tu::

Ya know…
This is a pattern that could be revived, and be a very useful, and desirable blade for EDC.
Right now, I’m imagining a few different configurations. Made with modern materials, and a contemporary design ethos (in several different genres).
I could see it with a mechanical pencil—so getting standard size lead would be easy.
Compact “tactical pens” are a popular item, the design could use the readily available refills.
You could do a military/tac version. Heavy duty, tac appropriate materials and colors.
A “Bushcraft” version. Different blade, firesteel…
A SAK style, with a variety of tools.
An “auto” ala Mikov or Kalashnikov.
A “Gentlemen’s/Executive” style. Sleek, classy design for the office. Abalone scales… the works!
Or you could add a pen/pencil to a “Leatherman” multi.
And add a value priced, “blue collar” version, made for the tradesman.
Now that I think of it, I can’t believe this simple, useful concept hasn’t been picked up by one of the larger makers. Esp. Victorinox, and Swiza, and the like—that already do multi-purpose.
Or are there any makers that I’m unaware of, anyone know of a modern knife of this type?

Edit, 1:20pm:
I’m seeing a few different ways to mount the pen/pencil tool as well. It could fold out, or slide out like an OTF. Be mounted in the handle, or be a part of the scales… lots of ways folks could think up, I reckon.

Edit, 1:24pm (sorry, but my mind is churning away here! ::groove:: )
The “Bushcraft/Survival” version could be a fixed blade, with the pen tool mounted to or in the handle.

Edit, 1:32pm (OK, last edit, I swear.):
I also see a “Tech/Urban” style, ala Boker’s “Urban Trapper” or “Tech Tool” where the pen tool would be replaced with a stylus for tablets and computer touch screens.

Interesting ideas. Unfortunately writing with pen or pencil seems to be a dying practice. ::dang::

Yeah...Some great ideas...but like Ken said several things are getting obsolete...writing, pictures, books ect...
everthing seems to be on-line... so sad to see that all disappear...I like the old school ways but; some new school ways not all bad either
I just noticed that there is a small hole in the knife perhaps to add a small bail any ideas?
Thanks for all the response ::tu::

Yes, these had a “ring” for convenience of attachment to a keychain. There are pictures of some with the ring/bale in the thread that Skip referenced. If it had a hole it likely came with a ring, but they were easily removed.

Yeah thanks Ken... I went back and saw the ones with rings in them that's great
The design is neat..I'm suprised some company didn't enhance and expand upon it instead of leaving it dormant all these years

As more things move “online,” there is less need for a pen or pencil. However, there are still many daily instances, in certain areas of life, for writing things down. Tradesman take notes, do calculations, make lists, draw plans up. Military guys use field notes. Outdoor hobbyists keep detailed notes of their excursions, people still keep written journals. And, with recent research indicating that the physical act of writing cursive, “wires” your neurons in a way that positively effects the learning process, some school districts are adding cursive writing back to their curriculums.
Tech may require less use of physical writing, but writing itself, will never go away, and I feel there’s more than enough people that write on paper to support such products—even as a niche, like vinyl records, or the lively market for manual and electric typewriters.

And to show that the idea of marrying a mechanical pencil and a knife, here is an example by Unwin & Rogers circa 1850s. Sadly the blade is broken, but the pencil still functions. Here are some examples of reverse thinking: a mechanical pencil with a knife added. Most are folding; one is a slider, and one has a Stanhope viewer with a picture of 2 Victorian era young ladies sans clothing.

Man, what a unique collection of “pen”knives, (pun intended.)
I’ve never seen anything like them. Amazing to my mind that there are new things I learn every day, and I’m always curious for more to know.
Thanks for throwing your hat in the ring—very cool stuff.

Wow... A very nice collection of the different pencil knives...
After General Electric stopped sponsoring the television show; I'm surprised someone didn't step up and take control so the show could go on!!
Thanks
