All About Pocket Knives

I was looking around on the auction site at what were listed as "Rail Splitter" patterns. Then I switched to "Western" brand and this knife popped up and I took a fancy and bid...long story short, I won it and its on the way.

While I think it resembles a Case Rail Splitter to my eye, I wondered if there is a subtle difference or if Western had a different name for the pattern or?

It doesn't really matter, because I bought it because I liked it, but it looks to be on the larger side and I haven't seen a Western like it before.

When I first looked at it "Trapper" popped into my head as well...but then I wandered down the rabbit hole that "Rail Splitter" brings up on the auction site again, and that name seems to be used as a pattern name on several different patterns depending on the brand. So I was just a wondering. I had an Old Timer Trapper that looked a lot like this Western.

A Railsplitter is a heavy teardrop (aka swell-end) jack, typical having a clip or spear master with a pen secondary. The sides are straight whereas a trapper has a curved frame. I’ve never seen a Railsplitter with a spey.

Rather than wandering down the auction site rabbit hole I recommend the AAPK Research section, or a keyword search here. You’re more likely to get learned info there than on an auction site.

Western call the 91 pattern a "Trapper's Knife". The leading 6 is for the handle material, which after 1961, was used for Delrin handles.

It is supposed to be here tomorrow...but we have had 3 days of snow and more expected, so...

Well this knife showed up...one of the scales is lifting and will need to be tacked down. The guy didn't mention it in the ad, so I called. He said he would take it back, but I really like this knife so I declined. I am wondering if it was just getting old and then the shipping process/temps may have caused it to come free on one end. But I am really liking the knife and other than the scale, it is in beautiful condition. The blades have 1/2 stop, and they snap open and shut with no blade wobble. I'll get the scale tacked down and then give it a gentle cleaning and then post some more pics.
