and who am I to doubt the solid provenance provided ...

Showing "proof" that the knife was used by this serviceman is weird. I think
if you wanted to show authenticity another way should have been selected.

I think that is a key point
...
Just because a guy owned a knife and that guy was in a war .... 
does NOT mean he caried it or used it in said war... .
I have a buddy that was a helicopter crew chief and door gunner on an attack helicopter in Vietnam. He carried a Kabar during his tour and brought it home. Now I trust that provenance, because I trust him. Now all other stories ....
well, unless you show me some evidence ...
well then it is just a story....
and that don't make a $100 knife worth $450 or $1,000 .....

People buy a well used military knife and always say I wish it could talk. I always smile to myself. Most of them would tell stories of being stored away for years then sold as surplus. Tails of Boy Scout Jamborees and hunting trips. Riding under seats of pick up trucks. Then sold on ebay 6 times.

I've seen so many blatant lies in knife sellers listing's to me they are like used car salesmen. They will sell you a lemon and tell you over and over it's a peach. It's sad to see them tell anything they can think of to inflate the supposed value with zero proof or provenance. Buyers beware.

When my brigade left Texas for Vietnam, I remember quite a few guys with big Bowie's and such hanging on their belts. Some of them were like the OP knife. After we hit the 100 degree/90% humidity environment I never saw any knives again. Heck, most guys wouldn't even wear a shirt unless they were made to, and carrying a heavy knife in a heavy sheath, no way. Lots of guys had a hard time finding their M-16 bayonet to turn in with the rifle when they rotated home. I'm sure there were some "11 Bravo" guys who may have carried knives but not many others for sure. Just relating what I saw. Seems knives always have a story, BS or otherwise. J.O'.

I agree , I was there early on and didn't see guys tote'n fixed blades, not saying they didn't. I was 8 inch artillery and some of my buddies carried personal side arms sent over by their folks, most of the grunts wanted as much ammo, water and bug juice as they could tote.

BH: I was a surveyor/F.O. in 8" at Ft. Hood. Those things were impressive. The ammo-humpers had a time muscling those heavy rounds. Maybe the new ones have some automation. And by the way, Welcome home.

The problem I have is that the seller has an old knife and a book about the Vietnam war with pictures of similar knives in the book.

My buddy was in Vietnam. He was a door gunner; I have seen the phots and citations and the knife he carried... that is provenance enough for me. So in an eBay listing, a book and an old knife does not mean that the knife was carried in combat! Show me a record of ownership of the item, that can bee used as a guide to it's authenticity. Maybe then I will fork over $5,000

Welcome home to you also brother, the 8 inch projo's weighed around 200lbs.with 50 lbs of powder to push them out of the tube. People ask what I did in the war I generally say I worked my butt off.
