All About Pocket Knives

I would like to get some opinions on whether these Benchmade knives are real / genuine or fake / clones. Thanks in advance, Dave

Believe it or not, it's easier to tell from the box the knife came in. But you can contact Benchmade and they will let you know.

the next best method is weigh them and compare the results to the specifications on Benchmade’s site. Be sure to use an accurate scale - counterfeits almost always don’t weigh what the authentic knife does.

If you send a knife to Benchmade and it’s not authentic, all you’ll get back is a letter, no knife.

If you call Benchmade they will be very helpful and they can usually tell you where the clone came from, if it is not a genuine Benchmade.
They know their Benchmades so well, it doesn't take them long to tell you if it is genuine not.

I sent a few photos to Benchmade and they said they couldn't tell if they're genuine or fake unless I send them to them.

The only knife I can comment on is the bottom knife in your second picture. Presidio or Mini Presidio.

The dimples on the handle slabs don’t look right to me. All of the Presidio models that I’ve ever seen have a different pattern on the handle. Could be aftermarket scales I guess.

How can they seize someones knife and destroy it? Is there some legal process for that or do they compensate the owner? I do believe that fakes should be destroyed, but by the owners decision, not some elses.

They have you complete a “Counterfeit Goods Acknowledgement” and this is what it says:

Upon reading it please acknowledge agreement by clicking its associated checkbox on the service request form. By selecting the checkbox of this Counterfeit Goods Acknowledgement and by sending in your knife for repair, you agree to the following:

If a knife returned for warranty work is found to be an actual or suspected counterfeit or replicate, Benchmade shall have the right to impound the knife for further investigation of its authenticity. Benchmade shall not be liable to you, or anyone else, for payment of the price of any suspected counterfeit knife under investigation. If Benchmade, in its sole discretion, determines that the knife you returned for repairs is a counterfeit, Benchmade has the right to permanently impound and/or destroy the knife. Knives determined to be counterfeit will not be returned to you.

Benchmade shall have the right to conduct destructive examinations to verify the authenticity of any knife Benchmade receives which it suspects to be a counterfeit. Benchmade shall not be liable to you, or anyone else, for the price of any knife destroyed by examination if it is later found to be a counterfeit.

Benchmade’s investigation may include the participation of third parties or governmental investigative agencies as required by law. By signing this Counterfeit Goods Acknowledgement and by sending in your knife for repair, you agree to cooperate in good faith with any investigation conducted by Benchmade, third parties, and/or governmental agencies, including, but not limited to, cooperating with investigations to identify the seller or source of the counterfeit goods by providing the name, location, and other identifying information about the seller.

I believe Buck has the same policy.

Uncle Sam has the same policy.
If you deposit money that is found to be counterfeit, and the bank catches it, or if you suspect that you received counterfeit money and take the bills to any bank, they will test them.
If it is counterfeit, it will not be returned to you.
You will not be compensated, and it will be reported to the Secret Service.
You can go to whomever gave you the counterfeit bills and try to collect from them, but really you have no recourse.

Weight is another good indicator. Usually the counterfeits weight a fraction of what the real knife weighs.
