What type of sheath do you prefer for your fixed blade: Leather or Kydex/Polymer & why?

Depends on the knife is what I'm thinking. Modern knife maybe a composite sheath, but my old Marble's might look out of place so for those, leather...

The best probably were Morseth's leather sheaths that had a synthetic inner piece that the knife snaped into. Their liner prevented the point pearcing the leather if you fell and required a good tug to release the knife preventing loss. However, with normal affordable knives my favorite is Buck's discontinued full flap leather sheath that the knife seated deep in. The why is because on a hunt I lost an irreplaceble knife that I brought back from Europe. It probably snagged on sage brush.

While there may be modern synthetic sheaths that have the same advantages as the Morseth without being inside leather, I like leather.

I have nylon and leather sheaths, but no Kydex. I have nothing against them, I just don't own any.
Most of mine are leather, and I have made about half of them.

Had this sheath made by a leather maker in Roswell NM for an Art Winters knife. I like it.

I own leather and kydex. If in the field hunting or working, I will never use leather, only kydex. Just to risky.

Good post. I have two original Harry Morseths with those cool sheaths, and I have purchased BUCK discontinued flap-over sheaths to replace the crap ones that they use now. The Hangas brothers who make the Ruana knives now have flap over sheaths. Love the type. When out in the boondocks it is most likely that I will have my fixed blade knife in a pack or fanny pack, regardless of the sheath. I don't need to have it instantly available on my belt and it is a nuisance there anyway. Now then... if I suspected that I would need it for defense, I would trade it for my firearm. In any case, the only synthetic sheaths I own are on two custom tomahawks; the rest are all good old aromatic leather.

This! I have leather, nylon, and kydex. Not all knives will fit in all sheaths of course, but I find myself carrying the ones that have the kydex sheaths. Just more convenient to me for a knife I’m going to carry. No snaps, the knife just fits snug (push it in until you feel it “seat”), and comes out with a tug. I don’t carry big knives on my belt though.

I have had snaps on leather sheaths come undone, and then wondered that the knife hasn’t fallen out since there’s little or no friction holding them in a well-used leather sheath. If turned upside down the knife will often just fall out.

Use what works for you.
