All About Pocket Knives

Just ran across this on the bay and didn’t even think the stamp was suppose to read 1865 and not 1895. I don’t have much in it thank goodness but I am curious is it’s a mistake made by Henry Sears or did someone go out the way to fake a stamp? The knife is as of an old Utica Cattle and I know Utica worked for Henry Sears so I like to get some feedback on this matter thank you in advance!

Thanks for sharing, I seen that and taking what I have seen and read is a mistake made by the author?

Thanks again, not seeing anything on the matter of a 1895 stamp?

Interesting that it doesn't say 1865.

I may be wrong, but the tang looks to have been shaved down, and the stamp looks cold-stamped, in my opinion.

I have doctored one of your photos to show what I mean. I drew a red line across the top of the tang. It should be straight across, but instead sweeps up near the spine. That is usually from someone grinding the name off of the tang.

Then in blue I point out the "mounding" effect of cold-stamping. Since the blade steel has already been tempered the stamp deforms the metal around it.

Also it appears that there is a "dip" in the surface of the mark-side bolster. Probably from sanding it down after re-working the knife.

None of this is absolute proof that the knife is a fake, but...

I don't think that's a "cold stamp". I've seen at least three other knives with that same 1895 stamp. Here's a shot of one. It's pretty blurry but it was definitely the 1895 stamp. This one was a stockman with black plastic handles and also made by Utica.

That is way awesome and definitely appreciate you for sharing this very much so. This is what I had another send me but doesn’t show all pictures but states it’s a 1895 stag just like mine noted just with slanted bolsters.
