All About Pocket Knives

My brother in law died several years ago and his widow is selling his small collection of knives .I realize E Bay may be the best place to sell them but she has a friend who is interested in two of them but I cannot find much info on value .One is a Cheetah w/stag handle and damascus blade ,date on box is 4/2011.The other one is a Whittler w/ stag handle and damascus blade num.5383WH Dam., date on box is 7/2009 .Any help on these would be appreciated.

Welcome to AAPK. While ebay may or may not be the best place to sell, it’s a great place to find current values. Do an advanced search, for sold listings only, of the item. That will show what the item actually sold for, not what sellers are asking. Compare the condition of your knife with that of sold knives, and adjust accordingly as necessary.

Although you did not specify in your post, from the pattern numbers you provided I’m guessing they are Case knives. If so, with rare exceptions any knife of the same pattern and from the same general era, in similar condition, will be worth about the same. In other words a knife made in 1982 will be worth about the same as one of the same pattern made in 1987, adjusted for condition. So don’t get hung up on a few years difference in manufacturing dates. Having the original box may or may not make any difference in value - it can’t hurt, but some collectors want the box, others don’t care.

He is asking for value estimates on two Cases that both have two of those "rare exceptions," Damacus blades and stag handles. While less common is a better description than than "rare," either feature adds value and combining them adds quite a bit of value. However, selling them without ebay's fees and shipping and without the work of running an auction is worth taking a little less.

Thanks. Recent sales of Damascus versions of both knives can be found using eBay sold listings. If you care to provide an opinion of value, go for it. I don’t generally collect newer knives so I don’t have an opinion.
