NORTHFIELD KNIFE

Hello,
I just picked up an old Northfield Knife. It is marked Northfield then Knife CO. I believe it is stag handle. Just wondering if anybody know the age of Northfield and possible value.

Okay, here are some pics of the knife. I can not get my camera in enough to get a pic of the stamp. It does state that Northfield un-X-ld knife co. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

Big Tex...on your camera, there might be a button that looks like a little flower, a tulip. That's called "macro" and lets you get really close without the blurry result.
Can you try that?

if you click to enlarge they are better pics. looks like a real nice little knife. what is the closed length. looks like a peanut.

Closed it is 2 3/4''. I was sort of curious to if the handles were stag?

appear to be bone to me. that length makes it a peanut. very cool old knife.

goins has a half page on northfield,1858-1919. as much as i've seen. maybe someone here knows of more info. the un-x-ld trademrk came about 1876 and i believe used till 1919.

Here are a few tidbits:
Established by Samuel Mason, a former Sheffield cutler in 1858 in Northfield , Conn., making the first cast iron handled knives. The company prospered, and soon bought American Knife Co. of Plymouth Hollow, and Excelsior Knife Company of Torrington.
Charles Platts (That name sounds familiar
) was plant superintendent from 1872 to 1896. The company at this point was making excellent knives, and the UN-X-LD (unexcelled) trademark was adopted in 1876. (as per Johnnie above
)
Company was sold to Clark Brothers in 1919, who immediately changed the tang stamp to their own. Bankruptcy followed in 1929.
