All About Pocket Knives

I recently aquired this knife from a local antique shop. Any knowledge regarding the model or timeline?

Pictured is the Mark side of the knife, the other side is the Pile side, and there may be a pattern number stamped on one of those blades.

I see no markings on the pile side blades. Maybe they wore off.

What's its closed length ? J.O'.

It's 3 1/4" closed.

Could be a 32559 or a 32649. Sorry, I can't nail it down with the books I have. Age ?? Good luck J.O'.

I did find some photos of 32649's but none of them had a nail file.

This 32689 is probably it. In Cattaraugus numbering system the last digit is the handle material. 9 is Bonestag (they called it “stag” in the catalogs). “Genuine Stag” is denoted by a 5. Catt made a LOT of whittlers, some look alike but they’re different closed lengths. For example they also made a 32799, 3 inch Senator whittler, and a 32579, 3-7/16 Senator whittler (all with bone handles). So accurate measurement is critical to determine the pattern. The age is gonna be sometime between about 1900 and 1940.

I have one just like it, that was a gift to me from ThomasG.
Like yours, mine has some blade wear, but mine has a sizable patch where the bone was broken out on one end.
It still snaps like a gator though, and this old steel is as sharp as a razor! It is really hard to beat an old Cattaraugus.

That's a nice one. Your right about the steel. I'm gonna sharpen mine up and put it in my carry rotation. The knife deserves to be used every once in awhile. I don't believe in having sad knives. Thanks for posting the photo.
