I've never been a Flitz or a Semichrome user, curious if Flitz takes an etch off a blade if you try and remove some of the surface staining/grime using Flitz

If it's an acid etch NO it won't. If it's an ink etch(which really isn't an etch)it will.

Hi Dan,if it is a mint etch that is grey, flitz or simichrome will remove the greyness. Never use those on a knife with a nice grey etch.

Well Gene,I just did.Etch shows up much better than before.

How can you tell the difference between ink etch and acid etch?

Pretty much any pre 1930 knife will be acid etch.Usually you can feel an acid etch also.Acid eats down into the steel.Late Remington knives are where you start seeing inked on or stamped etches instead of acid,usually with the "Master Knife" etch.I'm sure other brands were using ink also as it was cheaper.

I'll use this Krakauer stockman as an example, I believe this to be acid etched. Is this a candidate for a manual application of flitz with a microfiber cloth?
