Any ideas who’s making this years….?

I think the group concensus was Bear & Son.

Yep! I was expecting that, but one can always hope for another GEC release

$150 for a Bear and Son product? I think half that is about reasonable.

That’s not even a reproduction of a classic old Remington bullet pattern. Unless you think ~30 years is “old”.

That was my first thought, too. Is it because the knife is made in USA and that price is a reflection of the cost of manufacturing in America nowadays? Or is Bear and Son now producing GEC quality knives?

I liked the Remington Barlow that Bear made, but this is kind of a dumb looking knife. Others may disagree.

Camillus never made such a pattern (bird hook in a Trapper frame), did they? The R-1 (bird hook, Muskrat clip, choke wrench in a stockman frame) was the only one for Remington , and Camillus (for Buck also) was a Stockman frame with Muskrat clip/bird hook blades.

Not that I recall. Which is my point. There was a Remington-stamped knife with a bird hook released around the 1990s, give or take a few years. That is what I intended when I said “unless you think ~30 years is old”. Previous re-boots in the SMKW Bullet series were actual Remington Bullet copies.

Are you sure about that? I recall thinking the three back springs in the first SMKW Buck made Stockman were very disimilar to original Remington Bullet knives. While Camilus made Remington Bullet knives so they could not be fraudulently sold as originals they were closer to Remington's construction. Camillus' reproductions are not hard to find in unused condition and for so much less money that I could afford a second one for a user. I enjoy a few of them as userers.

I’m not familiar with those made by Buck, but it wouldn’t surprise me. (Not much from SMKW does). The “Bullet” knives made by Camillus were faithful reproductions of the original Remington Bullet series (save for more modern materials like stainless steel and Delrin). As were those made by GEC. Apparently I missed the Bucks.

After Camillus closed there has been a free-for-all of various patterns, from several makers, some even made in China, the only thing related to Remington is the name stamped on them. And numerous collectors who don’t know the differences. Not to say they aren’t good knives in their own right, they’re just not Remington reproductions. Caveat emptor.

Buck made the Remington Bullet from 2018 to 2020, and only using his own regular patterns.

Does SMKW make knives or just sell them?

They don’t make anything that I know of (except money). It’s a big store, not a factory. Think of a Walmart with a lot of knives.

This is modern reality.
However, SMKW is not only a knife store, but also a knife museum. I dream of visiting this someday.

Most of SMKW is made in a China. Lots of cheaply made junk, with some good knives from reputable makers mixed in. Last time I was there about 5 years ago the so-called “museum” was more an un-curated accumulation than a museum. I won’t be going again. JMO

Maybe you are right . I've never been there, I've only seen videos on YouTube .

Maybe you are right . I've never been there, I've only seen videos on YouTube .

If you’re in the area, go. There’s a lot to do around that area. But I wouldn’t make a special trip. I’ve been three or four times, and enjoyed it the first time about thirty years ago. Since then the store has expanded significantly, and the amount of made-in-China non-cutlery related junk for sale has increased exponentially. There is also a good selection of new Gerber, Böker, Case, etc along with the made-in-China knives.

Last time I was there we went with friends who were curious due to all the roadside hype advertising it for miles around. No one in our party of four adults found anything worth buying.

We were on the way to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, and Biltmore.
