All About Pocket Knives

I just finished up the work on this old Robeson Harness Jack. For info on how I obtained this knife and the before pictures, click the link below.

As you can see, it had a broken awl and a piece of bone missing from the pile side. I have made several replacement blades for folders before, but had never made an awl, but decided to "give it a stab", lol. The pictured awl replacement was made from 1095 bar stock. Much like making a blade except when one gets to the flute. I went with the Dremel tool method with the correct radius stone guided by a piece of scrap steel to keep things straight. Heat treating was done as standard for 1095 steel. The bone was patched with AcraGlas, color is not perfect, but close. Now it is in my pocket as an EDC. It joins my other Harness Jack, a Paxton & Gallagher, as the only 2 I have.

And that looks like a very effective awl.
The patch on the pile side rounds it right out. A very personal packer, for sure.

Is the pivot hole on the new awl smaller than the original hole?

Yes it is, the hole had a lot of wear and was oversize. I should have added that the bolsters are steel, so it was repinned with coat hanger wire.

That turned out great OC. Just perfect for your pocket or even to show off. What a wonderful old pattern. Glad you saved it.
