All About Pocket Knives

A online whittling group I belong to does a monthly challenge and it was a butter knife this month. I made this out of teak sealed with mineral oil(food grade). I figured I would see if anybody else had wooden knives. The whittling and wood carving section gets very few looks on here so I figured I would post it here.

Thanks Skip, it was different from my usual projects but it’s a knife and it’s wood carving, win win for me!! I even used it to make a grilled cheese for supper after posting.

Lots of stuff. I post regularly in the wood carving and whittling section but it gets very little traffic. Here are a few.

Thanks, I had a Great Uncle as a boy who was a great whittler. I’ve carried a pocket knife since about 8 years old and used to “whittle” sticks but got into more about 3 years ago. It also gives me a reason to buy more knives!

I have a wooden knife that I did not make. I bought it at a flea market for inspiration.
I would like to make a wooden knife someday in the same simple vein as the one I have. I guess it would be a butter knife.
I don't have the talent that you have but I think I could fashion one with a saw and a sander out of Maple.
Somehow I can't bring myself to use the one I bought in butter.

I say just go for it! For that style of simple knife a Mora knife would work great. I rough shape with a scroll saw and shape with knives. I don’t care much for heavy sanding but for a butter knife it’s necessary. You will find that it will cut better one direction than the other and one side may the opposite direction.

This is one of my favorites not just because the caving but because I made it as a gift for oldest son when he got his Eagle rank. It was a rough out from Steve Prescott(who always has large cartoonish hands) carved and painted by me.
